It is by AG, and you swim out a bit from shore and tread water there for a couple of minutes (or float since you will be wearing a wetsuit and dont want to wear yourself out before the race begins) until your wave is set off.

Is everyone ready?  This will be my first Olympic and OWS, any tips for this race from any veterans?

For first time OWS I would suggest getting in the water to get used to it. It might reduce your anxiety. I had alot of adrenaline going into the water my first time and couldn't get my breathing settled down enough to freestyle. If you do happen to panic go to a slow back stoke or breast with your face out of the water and get your breathing under control and your heartrate down some. You may lose a few minutes but it will stave off a full panic attack and a DNF. This does not happen to everyone but if it does and you are prepared for it won't slow you down too much.

Have a good race and God speed,
Dano

First time OWS,

"The DEEP": if you've never swum OWS, it can be a bit disorienting at first because there are no tiles below to look at.  Practice a lap or 2 swimming with your eyes closed.

Sighting: be sure to practice sighting so you stay on your line, or you can end up swimming WAY off course.  Count your strokes, then take a look after your designated number of strokes (say 15).

Don't lift your whole head to sight: take a peek by lifting just the eyes over the water while swimming without breaking your stride.

First time OWS,

Go look at the swim course set up before even getting in the water. Once you are in the water and your wave is up at the start, make sure you choose a position in the wave that you feel comfortable with. Hang out on the side of your wave or towards the back, give yourself your own room or at least as much as you can. This will help with avoiding contact at the start, which can be a little overwhelming your first time out. Try to stay calm and breathe. And above all, enjoy the swim! There is only one first OWS.

Can anyone tell me anything about the bike course?  Any sharp turns, big hills, etc. to look out for?

Few minor rollers. Some good turns but not sharp ones as I recall.  Do the loop 2x.  Road was not in great shape in parts last year, don't know with the winter weather how the condition is now.  VDOT has had bigger issues tan these little roads in podunk.

I just received an update from Setup Events stating that the water temp is 70 degrees.  It's hard to believe considering all the cold wheather we've had...but I'll take it.  I decided to buy a sleeveless wetsuit and was dreading a swim in low 60 temps.  Good luck everyone!

Do you recommend a wetsuit at that temp or can you get by without one?

If you can rent one, probably good.  Wet suits are still legal <76 degrees.

Getting excited for Saturday, it looks like there could still be a chill to the weather and a nip to the air, with a high of 69 and low of 46 on Saturday.  If the water is 70, it'll feel like a bath...well maybe not!

Warmer water temps are from nuclear power plant cooling (it's 5-6 degrees cooler on other side of the lake). You glow after the swim....

I was surprised to see the lack of freak-out-about-the-water-temperature postings.  As of last Friday, the lake was 62-66 degrees.

I read a handful of the race reports from last year and it looks like sighting was a real problem in the water.  Was there a glare at 10.00 in the morning?  I am hoping that the low angle light from early morning would have passed and it would not be too bad.

I think that I'm in the second wave...M35-40 age group.

I got blue tint goggles because of this race.  Glare is an issue when sunny, the last leg of the swim is southeast,  right into the sun.  I sight off the big white tent until the "big yellow man" is in plain view.

I got stuck in traffic coming down today from New York, did anyone catch the meeting at 6?  Anything important that came out of it that those of us that missed it should be aware of?

Looking forward to a fun race tomorrow morning!  Good luck everyone!

So, how did it go, everyone? That wind and chop made me forget all abut the water temperature. Challenging swim!

My first olympic and ows and my second tri is now in the history books!  Yes, the swim took me by surprise and was mentally challenging and took alot out of me.  That said, I came in right around my goal, so I was very pleased overall.

Sorry to everyone I ran into on the swim, I was zig-zagging the course, which slowed me (and others) down.  I have to work on ows sighting, I was lost, but just kept following the crowd and hope they knew where they were going, they did!  Bike seemed easier than the swim or run to me.

This was my first olympic triathlon and loved every minute of it!  The water temp was perfect for my new sleeveless wetsuit.  When I first arrived around 8 AM I was a little concerned about the high winds, cold air temp and white caps on the water....but it all seemed to smooth out by the start of the race.  It was a little windy on the bike, but it worked out on the smoother straightaways.  The only thing I didn’t like about the race was the trail run at the start of the run and again at the end.  It was hard navigating the dips in the grass, roots, rocks, etc while trying to get your running legs working after the bike and then again at the end of  the run when you are tired and trying to push it home.  It would be nice if they could get an actual blacktop/gravel path put in since there are multiple events at the same location.  Overall it was a great race and a great season opener!  Look forward to braving the elements next year.
