When signing up for this event, i'm not sure to enter as novice or age group.  Do all novice entries regardless of age compete, or is it novice in that particular age group.

i think novice is it own category.. you can check the results from last year to see if there are awards for novice..

i think it is.. though

So got this message today from Setup.
===========
A couple hints to guide you with your swim time:

00:45-01:20:  Super Fast (In contention to win the race and you swim competitively)
01:21-01:30:  Fast Enough (still starting in the first 1/3 of the event)
01:31-01:50:  Average Swimmer (Swim well enough and don't need to stop at the end of each lane line)
01:51-02:10:  Novice (Still getting used to this thing called triathlon)
2:11 and UP:  Complete Beginner/I want to start at the back
=============
Did anyone else laugh at the descriptions and times?

Is this a super fast swim?  1:31/100 isn't starting in the first 1/3 of the race?  That would be contrary to pretty much every pool swim sprint I have ever seen.

Seems like sending this out is going to have people completely fudge their times to get into one of these made up zones.

I got the same email and began to reconsider my swim time as well. I am a SLOW swimmer, about 1:55/100. But I have no problem swimming a 1000yds and holding that pace. According to the chart, I am afraid I will be with people who are stopping at each wall! Oh well.

It is my first tri, so I am no worried about time. Just looking to finish and feel strong.

EDIT:
Ok, I got to thinking AFTER I posted this.
I swim in a metric pool (25m) and always track my times per 100m. So my times are really 1:55/100m. But this triathlon is looking for times per 100yds. So if my math is right, I should re-send my swim time to be 1:43/100yds.

Does this sound right?? Undecided

yeah that looks right I think from yard/meter

My big problem with this "example" is that pretty much everyone already pads their time a bit, and these times are so out of whack (the first 2 swimmers last year came in at 1:10 and 1:20/100) that people are really going to pad their times now to get into one of these example zones.

Snake swims can be clusters all on their own, they don't need the RD's "help" to be even more so.

Ditto, got the same message. Not sure what the thinking is about categorizing the times, but I noticed they have same for all indoor swims.

They left out my category. I screwed up the math converting meters to yards, and entered 3:36/100. That's the "swim a length, take a nap" category! Got to fix it before the deadline to change closes.

Assuming you are a guy like me... I wear Tri shorts and a very snug sleeveless tri top. I tried wearing just the shorts and putting the top on in T1 but it was a fiasco. My wife thought it was pretty funny though. Some guys go topless the whole race but I am very hairy and don't want to subject innocent bystanders to the horror. If this is your first and you don't want to spend the money on special gear you can were a jammer or other type of swimsuit and not worry about it.

Might be a bit chilly to go shirtless I would go with a tri-suit or tri-top/tri-shorts

Depends on where you live as to where to buy.  Every mfg seems to fit a bit differently so I would want to try it on first.

Anyone potentially want to ride the course a couple times one of these weekends?

$80 is a lot for a sprint.  I will say the long sleeve technical shirt that gave last year is really nice.

the shirt is not a big sell - it's a men's dri fit so i'll never wear it, just like my patriots shirt - but the saturday 10 am start and barbecue after - that's a reason to TRI

There are a bunch of cool BT'ers doing the race, that alone is worth at least $80.00 so the race, shirt and BBQ are just bonus at that point.

X2 on the BBQ at the Tavern Tri. I am going to sign up soon. Hope alot of BT'ers come out. Hopefully the swim will be a little less formidable this year since they shortened the length.

Anyone getting the pre-race jitters yet? It's my first tri.

I'm OK on the run. I know what to expect there.

I'm nervous about the swim. I'm at the tail end of a virus, and my swim time is slower than what I submitted. I don't want to be the slowpoke that holds other swimmers up.

I was anxious about the bike because of this:

http://www.beginnertriathlete.com/discussion/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=197159&start=1

but I got a bike handling lesson yesterday and now know how to stop without crashing. I'm going on my first road ride today. (I have been doing progressively longer rides on the trainer.)

I thought about going down this weekend to ride the course, but it would be 7-8 hours RT. Too far for me.

polliwog,

This is my first tri as well and I am getting a little nervous too. The bike is the part that makes me nervous. I have not gotten out on the road nearly as much as i wanted to. i have done trainer rides but i just don't think they are enough.

Oh well, i just have to suck it up and see what happens.

they shortened it AND changed directions - it is all with current, one direction, entering the water up in the neighborhoods and exiting at the same point.  THANK YOU LAURIE

The website says, "If the (river) speed is normal with slow movement, the course will be up and back. If it is fast, swimmers will walk up to the access ramp and swim down, if it is unsafe, a duathlon will be in effect."

Sorry for hijacking the Smithfield thread. You guys will do fine at Smithfield. Everyone is nervous before their first tri. You will remember it - the good, the bad, and the ugly - fondly in the future. And if you really enjoy it you can do another one, like, say ... The Tavern.Smile

God speed to y'all!
