Expert 1452 Troy, MI | Subject: RE: Fifth Third River Bank Run - 25K : Official Thread Hey guys, I'm thinking of doing this one. Many friends in my running club are pace group leaders. Pace groups are usually offered by larger events. Sometimes there is a training event with the pace group before the event but other times you just run with them when you get there. If you go on the website for the 25k there is bios of the pace group leaders. There will be several for the pace you guys are running. They usually have bright colored shirts and hold up a sign so you can base your pace on the steady pace they are running to average your goal time. http://www.53riverbankrun.com/event-information/e1/meet-the-pacers.php Edited by jogo 2010-04-18 7:58 PM |

Expert 819 | Subject: RE: Fifth Third River Bank Run - 25K : Official Thread What jogo said. At the GR Marathon last year, you just sort of found a pace group leader with your goal time and went with them. Sort of gives you a support group for the race. Edited by leftrunner 2010-04-18 11:55 PM |

I was on the fence anyway so thanks for making the decision for me. Next year, right??? |

Regular 87 | Subject: RE: Fifth Third River Bank Run - 25K : Official Thread A little less than two weeks to go and I'm pretty psyched for Riverbank! Even though I've already done three events this year (10K, Half Mary and a 15K) for some reason this feels like the start of the season. Certainly this will be the big to-do as we come fully into workout weather. I'm starting my taper and am still hopeful about my sub-2 hour goal. I've wavered a little as I have felt fatigued and have struggled with motivation in the last week, but when I read through my workout journal I can see plenty of recent runs with the right pace. Today's 6.5 was a little slow, but it was a really hilly gravel road run. Good luck to all as we approach the date. I'm pleased to have learned about the pace groups and have talked to some fellow runners about it. Keep going! |

It is a great race to officially start your season. Maybe I will see you in the 2 hour pace group. I'll be there too, at first anyway. Last year I did 2:07:03, so I think it is doable. Hills were worse last year. I plan to start with the pace group, and hold on as long as I can. There are only two possibilities for me, either 1:59:59, or 3 hours and change if the wheels come off. We shall see. Hope to see you guys there. |

Regular 87 | Subject: RE: Fifth Third River Bank Run - 25K : Official Thread Starting gun is just a few days away! I'm trying to take it easy this week, ran a mellow 5 today. Still hoping for 1:59:59 or better. So I should know this by now, but...would the 7:45 pace group be the place to be and pick it up in the last couple of miles or is there a better plan? Thanks. This is my first Riverbank. |

Expert 819 | Subject: RE: Fifth Third River Bank Run - 25K : Official Thread There is a 2 hour pacing group. There are 3 pacers listed for this time. Not sure if there are 3 groups, or one big one. That works out to a 7:43, so I imagine that will be the pace. See you there. |

Veteran 275 Grand Rapids, MI | Subject: RE: Fifth Third River Bank Run - 25K : Official Thread Ran the first 7 miles of the course on Monday. Pretty flat, and a nice area to run. didn't get to run that section last year because of the flooding. Held around 8:15 pace and felt great. Still thinking 7:43 is possible. |

Expert 1260 Norton Shores, MI | Subject: RE: Fifth Third River Bank Run - 25K : Official Thread Looks like some crappy weather for Saturday...cold, rain, and wind...lovely. Hopefully we get lucky so it is at least dry. I am running the 10K for some fun. Looks like everybody is shooting for that sub 2 hour time goal. I hope you all get in under that mark. Negative splitting is also a great strategy and something I definitely recommend. Start conservative and turn it up the last half if you are feeling it. Good Luck. Ryan |

Regular 87 | Subject: RE: Fifth Third River Bank Run - 25K : Official Thread Ran my last few miles before Saturday's run...a mellow 5 miles at 44 minutes. Put in a good stretch afterwards. I'll do some light yoga tomorrow. Friday I'll be a head timer at a high school track meet so I'll drink from the fountain of youth and relive some glory days. Saturday we run. |

I thought the weather ended up cooperating pretty well. If you train outside around here you do a lot of training in worse than this so on race day with all the other runners and supporters, plus the rain essentially holding off, it was fine. Last year was much worse in the 25k because we were soaked before we even started..... This year I did the 10k so maybe some of the 25k runners got wet, haven't heard... The disappointing thing though is the post-race beer tent isn't quite as fun in the cold so I skipped it... |

Regular 87 | Subject: RE: Fifth Third River Bank Run - 25K : Official Thread Hey, big-talker here...I got spanked, and not in a good way. Had a good run overall and I don't know the official time, but my watch says 2:16:21. I'm disappointed but I learned a lesson in race strategy, I think. I started out between the 7:30 group and the 2 hour group. Ran the first 5K in 22:42 and the next 5K at 23:04, then I ran into trouble... The porta-potty lines were crazy before the starting gun and even though I had a chance to get through a bathroom line at packet pick-up at 7:30 a.m. I found myself needing to pee again at 8:05. I chose to hold it and needed to go after the first 10k. It had turned into my total focus. I hit an aid station, lost my pace group (there seemed to be a fast two-hour pacer and a slower two-hour pacer, yes?) Felt much better, had a goo and went back after the pace group. Next mile at 6:51 -- bad idea. Logged a 7:41 and a 7:53 after that but started to feel very fatigued, legs got very heavy and my mindset began to falter. My ipod playlist was great, however and helpful. I kept hitting my lap timer at the mile markers, but stopped worrying about what the watch said. No more math in my head as I ran. After the race was over I could see the decline: 8:21, 8:41, others similar...a 9:21 at mile 13. The 8 minute pace group passed me...the 8:30 pace group passed me. I tried to bring it back around. A really good, supposedly inspirational song came on my ipod and the crowd noise drowned it out. At this point in the run I just wanted to finish. The home stretch was awesome with energy. The weather was great but seemed to get colder and rainy right after I left. I guess I was fast enough to beat that. I had fun and gave it a good shot. Being my first Riverbank and farthest run ever at this point in my life, it's actually my PR. I believe my main error, of course, was in starting a little too fast and in the foolish mid-race sprint basically. It was a good lesson in just running your run. I think I'll try that tomorrow on a nice, mellow, untimed recovery 10k. I hope you all had good experiences. |

Expert 1260 Norton Shores, MI | Subject: RE: Fifth Third River Bank Run - 25K : Official Thread Well my goal going into the race was 40:30 for the 10K and sub 40:00 was my stretch goal which I really thought was attainable. Hit 40:30 on the nose. I did not think it was possible to run the first mile too slow but thats what I did. It was my slowest mile of the race...kinda stupid. Otherwise I thought it was fun and maintained a pretty steady pace. I thought the weather turned out ok, just waiting after for my carpool mates to finish was really cold. paddlesurfer - I always learn something from every race..just more motivation for later right. Expert 819 | Subject: RE: Fifth Third River Bank Run - 25K : Official Thread Well...I beat last year...by 1 friggin' second. 2:06:56. I tried for 2 hours, and until 10 miles I was on track, but then I just could not hold the pace. I suppose I may have gotten a 2:03 of so had I started out more conservatively, but was not to be. I was upset, then met up with my wife, who was proud of me, and I realized how many people never got to the starting line, and how that was a victory in and or itself. So, not too bad after all. Great job to everyone who got up early despite weather reports that reminded me of revelations. I am sure we all have stories to tell. I can't wait to read all of you race reports. |
