Pre-race routine:

Up at 4:30...laid in bed until 5am. 2 slices of multigrain and peanut butter with a mug of green tea. 1/2 banana. Took the pooch for a walk around the neighborhood. Took care of business and left for race site at 6:30...last year I got there too early and froze. Parked on the side streets and that worked out fine.
Event warmup:

Handed in sweats at about 7:30, remembering to switch to sunglasses...jogged .25 mile to the start and then decided to do a warmup jog to get loose. Realized after about 10 minutes that I did not need arm warmers or gloves so jogged back to sweat check, and then they were saying 3 minutes til start!!! Hightailed it back to the start line and they were still doing announcements. I think it was great though to get that little sprint in. All week, my legs were feeling kind of sluggish and then suddenly they felt great.

Comments:

Started out pretty close to the start but still did not cross the mat until 2 minutes after gun time and people were not running so that was kind of frustrating. First mile was a 7:05, so I don't think it made too much difference. The first 7 miles of this run felt like a breeze, and everytime my HR started creeping up above zone 3, I backed off just slightly. Miles 7-10, I struggled just a little to keep up the effort and pace. We had a tailwind here, so I think I was just starting to fatigue and we were no longer going downhill! Took my gu at about 6.5 miles, water every 15 min (carried my little fuel bottle). The last 3.1, we made the turnaround and turned straight into a strong headwind.

Strategy was to turn it up into Zone 4, but I honestly couldn't imagine doing that for 20 plus minutes with that headwind, so decided to wait until mile 11, which came none too soon. At that point, people were either slowing down or I was really speeding up because I passed a bunch of people. Initially I tried drafting, but no one was going my pace, so I figured I'd better just get it done myself. Right as we made the turn back into the park, there is an uphill grade and then it seems like it takes forever to get to the finish line. It was painful being above my LT, but I dug deep to focus and not get caught up with negative thoughts.

My right foot tendon did not bother me at all and I had no heel issues.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing at all, this was by far one of my better efforts at a longer than 10k race. Maybe, just maybe, I could have tried turning it up at mile 10, but I made a tactical decision and I think it worked out well, because my last 2 mile splits were in the 7:20's.

Last year I ran this race and died during the last 3-4 miles...today pr'ed by 12 minutes!
Post race
Warm down:

Just grabbed my goodies, had an energy/recovery drink and headed for the car.

Event comments:

Great race on familiar terrain. Volunteers are terrific.

You crushed that race! Headwind and all! Poor little you not having anyone big to tuck in behind! Oh well, that's what you get for pacing so well and having more in the tank than those others around you who were dropping like flies. Congratulations again! I am so impressed!! And 12 minutes is a HUGE PR. Yowza! Yay for you!

Great race Kim, lol, maybe you need to go slower to find someone to run behind to block the wind ; )

Wow, that's a crazy-fast race and a terrific PR!

I wish I'd thought of drafting off someone those last couple of miles on the Great Highway -- there were lots of people going about my speed but it never even occurred to me. Next year!
