Subject: Ironman CA - Oceanside 70.3 Bike Course Question
Hello Everyone,

If anyone has any input on the Oceanside 70.3 bike course, I would appreciate it. I have read several reviews of the course and some people talk about a couple good climbs. But, when I pulled the course on MapmyRide, it only showed around 3% grades as the steepest which, being from a hilly part of the world with 6-7% climbs all over, didn't sound like that much. I am just trying to figure out my gearing for the race...

Thanks,
Scott

Going from my now-foggy memory of discussions about this race here and on Slowtwitch ... there are a few hills with significantly more than 3% grade, or 6-7% for that matter! However, I don't think any one hill AVERAGES over 9-11%. There are several sections that go up to 17-18%.

If you scroll down a few messages on p.7 of this thread, you'll find the bike profile

Good luck!

For someone that is accustomed to climbing, the hills on this course won't be too bad.  There are a couple of climbs, but neither lasts for more than a few minutes.  I was comfortable with a 12-25 and a standard double ring up front.  If you are a good climber, you can pass a lot of people on the uphills.
