Just got a trisuit..but I'm not going to get much chance to train in it for the swim..my race is on 28th Feb and I won't get to the ocean with it...and don't want to go to the pool with it..

Is it too risky to use it for the first time in a sprint race?

Sprint? Not really too much risk. You might get chaffed but you won't have time to really get eaten up.

The swim won't be the problem. Go run a 5K in it and see how you feel after that.

just wear it in the pool once so you know what it feels like. you're not going to hurt your suit with one dip in the pool. and if you dont get a chance to wear it, dont worry, its just a sprint so you wont be uncomfortable for too long. put some bodyglide around your neck and down under your arms where the suit may rub and that'll help you out with any chaffing you may run into.

It's not ideal, but it's just a sprint so I wouldn't stress about it.  Sprint tri's aren't much longer than a training day, so I don't think it matters.

I am a firm believer in "don't try anything new on race day".  I'd try it in all 3 disciplines including the pool.  If nothing else, you may find where some Glide is needed.

Yes, too risky, it will likely explode!!!! ok kidding aside,

i guess i am the rarity but there are times where i think we take the dont try anything new on race day overboard.

its a sprint race. you'll be fine in a new suit.

I just did a 5k in jean shorts, no ill effects (minus being frozen).

If you are really worried take it to the pool, swim in it once, and then wash it off after. it wont come apart after one swim.

They are well worth finding!

Try on the suit to make sure it fits, then go with it. Seriously, you'll be fine. If you CAN try it out in all three disciplines, boo-yah, but don't worry about it. I bought my tri shorts on the way to the race, just straight up spandex with no padding, and did fine.

Personally, I never use anything I haven't tried out before racing... and I don't want any surprises during the race.

You have numerous things that could happen... in the water, the tri suite might feel too big and take on a lot of water, or be almost see through when soaking wet... on the run/bike it might be chafing, or too big/small, etc. etc. etc.

You can always try it out in the pool for just a couple of laps, get out rinse it really well and change in to your normal swim attire. Try it out on the treadmill for a couple of minutes and try it on a trainer for a short spin... at least this way, you know it will work for you.

Dumb question but I haven't bought a tri-suit yet.  Is the chlorine THAT bad for the suit?

my first race is on the 27th. I just wore my tri top and shorts out for the first time for Monday's swim/bike brick. I'm so glad I did because it's such a different feeling to wear clothes in water!!It wasn't a huge deal but I wouldn't want to experience that for the first time during a race.

Chlorine isn't going to damage the suit unless you swim in pools frequently.  A few times isn't going to hurt anything.  It's just loke lycra jammers.  It takes a couple months of 3 a week swims to cause them to start coming apart.

I'd give it a quick try in the pool beforehand-- as others have said, one time in chlorine won't hurt it if you wash it out afterwards...and swimming in clothes of any kind feels rather different from swimming in a regular suit. (I had to do lots of swimming in clothes years ago for lifeguard training-- it's just good to know what your suit feels like in the water, as well as where it's likely to chafe.)

Went to look at your blog to see what the distance is.  I really don't buy the "It's just a sprint" mentality.  A "Sprint" that is 800m/20miles/5k can have us beginners/slower folk out there for two hours or more.  The winner in my AG division took 1:32, I was definitely slower.  Shove a rock in your crotch for 1.5-2 hrs and tell me if "its just a sprint" really holds out.  (sorry for the vent).  I subscribe to the "nothing new on race day" for most stuff.  A Tri suit working well is pretty dang important.  I would really consider not using it if you don't at least get a chance to try it out in each of the disciplines.

You should be able to suffer through almost anything during a sprint.  Heck, some people even suffer through sprints without even training for them.

If it fits I'd use it.  I would also swim in the pool with it at least once just to see how it feels.
