Subject: Swimming leads to shoulder/back stiffness => effects running

Last month I started swimming after years of break.  I'm pushing myself pretty hard in the pool with a master's swim team.

The problem is that I'm finding my shoulders are accumulating stiffness (trapezius muscle), which is negatively affecting my running form.

I've taken a few weeks off of swimming and my shoulders are loose again.

Are there some stretches that I can do to keep my shoulders loose while building up swimming fitness?

Or, do I just need to build up the swimming a more gradually?

Thanks!

Hmmm, if you just started swimming again a month ago, and you are pushing yourself pretty hard, it seems to me that you failed to follow the gradual build rule. Take it easy, build gradually. That's the injury prevention rule.

I would continue the swimming, but have someone at masters look at your form. Your traps shouldn't be tight from swimming unless you are in a constant shoulder shrug. You may need to back off the masters adn unlearn some habits.

But in the meantime, why not try some yoga following swimming (that night or the next day?)
