I do almost all of my riding in Broward but I would like to switch things up as rides get longer again.  Broward county has a fairly useful bicycle suitability map; what about Dade??

Does anyone have a good link or any good suggestions?  I know Biscayne and the causeways are good places to ride but I am most interested in finding routes FROM Broward TO Dade (even to Key Largo) so I don't have to drive then ride.  I have taken A1A down and it's not too bad.  What about 27?  Does it get too crazy once you get to the turnpike?  I've also taken Krome Ave through the Everglades to Tamiami but that's just too crazy (man, what a sweet route that would be if there were actually shoulders or bike lanes).

I appreciate any and all suggestions.

Thanks!!

Hey Michael...

There is a great route to come to South Florida...You can start in Viscaya....go to Coconut Grove (Matheson Park)...from there...take the Old Cutler Road south til SW 87th Av.(Galloway Rd.) there turn left...and....continue south till Black Point Marina....and...from there...you will continue on Coconut Palm Dr. (SW 248th St.) west...if you continue west and cross the US1...you will be in The Redlands area (excellent for long rides)....but...if you want to go more south...passing behind the Homestead Air Base...before the Florida Turnpike...you will turn left on SW 107 Av south...then...turn right on SW 304 St west...then...turn again left on SW 112nd Av. south...then turn again right on SW 312nd St. west...and...again left on SW 117th Av. south...and...when you get in the second bridge or canal...here you have 3 options...turn left on SW 328th St. / Canal Dr. east to go to Biscayne National Park or Bay Front Marina where you can have a techinical stop for beverages / snack / restrooms...or...turn left on Canal Dr. to go to west...to...the Homestead Speedway area...Keys Gate area...or...you can continue on the SW 177th Av south till the point that you will need to turn left or right...turn right...it's SW 344th St. Palm Dr. to west...you will pass behind the Homestead Speedway and continue west on Palm Dr. till you get in Florida City / Homestead.......merging in the US1...if you continue west You can go to the Everglades NP...and...if you go south...You can take the famous Card Sound Road to go to Key Largo...Ufffffff....!!!! The people of Hammered Tri-Club usually organize a lot of rides to these areas...check with them...

If you need more routes around the Redlands...let me know or contact me...is where I train...

Good Luck...!!!

Thanks for the response, Velo (especially all the detail)!

I know Redlands is a great place to train after being in the area a few times for MiamiMan.  I guess my main concern at this point is to find the best ways to get there from where I'm starting out.  From Broward, is A1A through South Beach the best route to get TO Viscaya to start your route?  Also, I would be coming from Cooper City so if there is a good westerly route without much traffic I would prefer that.  As mentioned, if Krome Ave was safer between 27 and Tamiami I would take that all the time.  Unfortunately, with no shoulder and all of the industrial trucks, it just doesn't feel safe.

I do have some good options so maybe I'm just whining.  I like to stay out west just for the lack of congestion and traffic lights but if A1A from Lauderdale north to Palm Beach is my consolation ride then I guess I'm doing ok :)

I do want to do the Keys run sometime when I get back into century rides.  Is it better to take the main vehicle route or the northern crossing (Old Dixie Hwy to North Key Largo)?  edit: scratch that.  I just saw that you said Cards Town Rd; that's the northern route, right?

Thanks again for the info and enjoy your training...hopefully we get a few more months of cool weather before it becomes oppressive again!

Hey Michael...

First...there is no way a safe route from west to south...US27 and Kromme Av...are really dangerous roads...the best...it's the route that I mentioned before...starting from Viscaya...

And from where You are starting out  to Viscaya....I really don't have clues...LOL

And about the Card Sound Rd...this road is the one that start from Florida City just when you start in the US1 to go south to Key Largo you turn left...and it's the one that you pay toll and go to the famous Ocean Reef and Key Largo...It's a great route...The Everglades Cycling Club always organize rides over there...

I will have both routes in my Route Manager and I will post the link here for you...

Wish I would have seen that yesterday.  I had a long ride planned anyway.  Although, I have a newborn in the house so it's a little difficult commiting to any specific training times at this point.

Thanks again for all the info.  I did a test ride down to South Beach and that is NOT the best way to get to Viscaya   Maybe jumping over to US1 a little farther north...

Google Maps now has a Bicycling feature for creating bike routes.

This might help everyone in Miami-Dade and Broward:
