Who's in, and have you started your training?

We're expecting warmer temps here in PA this week, so hopefully the snow will melt a bit and I can get to the park for a run. I hate treadmills.

I am in!!Smile I live in South Florida and I can tell you this is going to be an awesome venue. I am doing this race one month prior to my full IM as a confidence builder. I am training now but have not started the heavy duy training for the full IM yet.

I hope the weather gets better for you! if you need any info regarding Miami ask me....Good luck with your training and hope you can get out to swim soon.

Tri on...Cool

I'm in and looking forward to it. It should be a great race. I've not started training for that race yet as I'm training for the MIT now and have 4 other sprints before I start training for that one. I've been reading a couple of Joe Friels books while training, trying to get as much knowledge as possible before setting up my training plan for that race. (Going Long, Triathletes Bible and The Paleo Diet).

I feel for you, treads can suck, it's about as boring as using the trainer.

Good Luck....

I'm also from PA and in for this race.  I haven't started training specifically for this, but have started my 1st 20 week plan for Eagleman 70.3 in MD in June (but I was only able to register for the Aqua-Velo).  Week after that I will start 20 weeks to target Miami 70.3.  This will be my 1st HIM.

One thing I am nervous about is that this will be a race I probably won't drive to so I need to have a plan for bike transport.  However, the Miami site still says they hope to name a local bike shop soon.  Ideally I'd like to fly & ship the bike to a bike shop for pick-up in Miami.  However, if this is going to cost $$$s, I might just drive down.  I know it's still 8 months away, but I'd rather have it taken care of so I can make all the arrangements and just worry about work & training (well -- let's be honest -- training & work!!).

I'm in.

How's training coming along?  My training is underway, ready for a fast Oly in 4 weeks and switching to HIM training immediately after. I train East of the Tampa area.  Looking forward to more comments/support from the many registered racers.

training going as planned 90% of the time, just completed 6 weeks of BASE and will start ramping up the distances next week.  Earlier today I did an LT Test / (solo) Bike TT - 15 miles avg 21.7 mph

I don't expect to go that fast on raceday but this type of workout produces some power, which I will need to go the distance.  Ran 8 miles on Monday at 9:35 pace.  However I have not competed in any races except for St Anthony's in late April where I flunked the run.

Pretty soon I will start with bricks, but I still avoid the pool (yeah, I know)

How is everyone else's training coming along.

Sounds like your training is going well ;-)!!!!....except for the "pool thing"...now get your butt out there in the pool or at the beach...lol

My training is going well so far. I am really focusing on IM Cozumel, I am still not sure if this race is 2 close to the IM but everyone I have talked to says just use the HIM for training and it will be good....Hmmmmm...I am looking forward to it, the venue should be great!!

Happy Training!!! Cool

I have started a 20 week program slightly modified from the BT free HIM plan.  (My modifications are that I swim 4-1/2 hours per week so I'm not following the swim portion as it is way too little swimming.  Also, I'd like to run just a little bit more than the BT plan.)

I'm 'opposite' of you -- I swim alot but really need to step up the bike.  I did the Aqua-Velo part of Eagleman 70.3 on the 13th.  Up to that point I've just been doing a base of 9 to 10 hours a week.

So now it will be serious, steady progressive training for 20 weeks. Bricks & long rides will be a part of it.   It feels kind of strange because everybody around here is in peak form (as it is the race season around here), but I fell like I'm still in February mode!!

yeah, this thread seems real quiet.

I am real antsy and not getting any news or email updates from the race director doesn't help

they did post the routes, altho they don't print (or Im dumb).  I'm thinking of driving there the last weekend of the month and scout the routes in person and do some toeing.  Anyone wants to join?  Not sure it would be ok to swim in there w/o some markers.

I will be staying in N Dade area (Miramar/I-75) and drive down to the race site.  No firm plans yet.  The SFT (Hammerheads) are doing some long rides too.   I am more interested in finding shade on the run - yeah, October is pretty much the same as July down here - at least 80F + humidity.

This will be my first HIM and I am shooting for a 6:17 finish (or around 1:30 PM - ufff).  What's your goal?

You are right...not getting any emails or info by the race directors is a little lame in my opinion but oh well!

I think riding the route would be fine but noooooooooo swimming....unless you someone is scouting no boats, no jet skies...etc..

Yes, it will be a super hot one I say but I love the no wetsuit for me ;-). I am hoping to finish healthy and not burn myself out as I have IM Cozumel one month later, it will be my first IM....ahhhhhhhhh

I am so looking forward to this HIM, it is going to be a blast!

First, glad to hear that there's not something wrong with my e-mail - I was beginning to wonder about the lack of information from the race organizers.

Now for the Questions...

This will be my first HIM and the first time I'll be in Miami.  I've looked at the expected temperatures (air and water) and now have some questions for anyone who a) lives in Miami or b) has raced in this area before.

1.  Is the MacArthur Causeway a road I can bike on (to bike the run course on Thursday?)
2.  I understand the run course is pretty shadeless - is this true?  Expect constant sun?  Is this are a breezy/windy?
3.  Are these areas of Miami known for wind?
4.  Specifically, does the bike course offer any protection from wind (trees, buildings?)
5.  I plan to rent wheels - does anyone who has raced in Miami have any advice (unless I hear that the bike course is crazy windy I'm looking at a deep front wheel - think 808 - and a disk on the back end - is this safe?)
6.  Is it reasonable to expect the water temperature to be warmer than the air temp?
7.  Is it reasonable to expect to drive the bike course on Thursday?  Is this a major traffic route?
8.  Has anyone actually used ironmanwheels.com before?  Thoughts/opinions?

I believe I will be able to take advantage of a good set of rental wheels IF the weather isn't to windy...

Thanks!

i wish i could answer but am not local... also my first HIM.
What I know is that the swim will take place behind BAYSIDE which is a very busy w/ boats, so, nopre-race practice, however, there are hundreds of other locations in the area to swim.

I hope the run isn't shadeless, but I know Miami is purely flat except for any bridges.

The SFT club has a ride planned for Oct 17.  I believe anyone is invited to join.  Google them for details.  While ur at it, check out TriBeach location if you wanna swim.

Welcome to South Florida!

Here is some info that may be helpful....

YES!!! it will be hot and possibly windy. The bike course is definately windy going over the causeways (our hills..lol) but we can definately survive it. There will be buildings, trees and homes in certain areas to block the wind so there is no need to panick.

The Water will most like be too warm for a wetsuit...last year I did a HIM in Miami and the water was one degree below so we were allowed to use wetsuits and most people (including me) had to take them off on the second loop due to feeling overheated...so plan on no wetsuits ;-). The area of the swim can be a little choppy with strong current. I just did "escape to miami" last weekend, similar swim and the current was pretty strong.

You can certainly drive the bike course, YES there is alot of traffic but you can drive it...bike it? hmmmmm not recommended unless a TRI group is putting up a ride together.

It is an awesome venue. We should all have a great time! For those coming out of town make sure to make a stop in South Beach!!!

Tri on kids...

I feel the same way! This is so strange...I keep going to the website to see what is going on and nothing has changed. Hard to get motivated and inspired with this...I sure hope the race goes well as I am using this for part of my IM training.

How is your training going "vabeachnut 1"? any other races you are doing? first time in south florida?...lets keep the thread going even if it is just you and me!!!

Happy training...Alicia

Training is going great! I am following a 20 week training plan from Triathlete Magazine's Essential Week by Week Training Guide. Presently I'm in peak phase before I begin my taper in a couple of weeks. I have my long swim, ride, and run this weekend. My riding days are limited though as I have to pack my bike for transport in 2 weeks.

This is my first HIM. I've only done 2 sprints and a half mary this year. I was supposed to do the North East Oly but had to pull out to rest a calf injury from July. I chose Miami 70.3 because the terrain is similar to where I live in Va Beach. Flat and windy most of the time. The day after the race, my wife and I are getting on a cruise ship for a 7 day carib cruise. It will be a welcome respite after months and months of training.

Considering how quickly this race sold out, I would have expected more excitement by now.
