Any recomendations? There has to be a middle land between aero/weight and strength right? What are you guys using?

Both Zipp and Hed make aero wheels for the bigger person.  They are adding spokes for reinforcement, which adds a little weight.  Zipp has Clydsdales and Hed has Stalions.  I've also heard, the Hed tri spoke is a very strong and durable wheel.

I race with Zipp 808 Clydsdale wheels.  I'm 220 and no issues.

When I went with my 808's, talking to the guys at Zipp, they said the clydes weren't necessary at my weight (215)... in hind sight, for peace of mind I would probably change my decision, but overall, loving the wheels!  My day to day wheel set is Mavic Ksyrium SL's and they are a thing of beauty!

I used a 404 rear and 303 front, full carbon tubular s that are the Clydesdale version (24rear/20front) and i am 240#, worked great, and roll super fast.

The tubular s are a little rich form my paycheck so are for sale if you are interested.

Ill throw in my recent findings on wheels.  I'm 275 so my wheels are taking a pouding.  My bike came with ALX330 16/20 aero spoke wheels, these cannot handle the weight.  If a bike mechanic trued them everyday, maybe.  I'm going to for now go with cheap Mavic Open 28/32 wheels that should take whatever I throw at them.  Not aero like the HED or Zipp's but a good cheaper option.

My $.02 I ride Mavic Aksium. I bought my Felt F85 about 2 years ago and rode the original wheels until I broke a spoke on the rear wheel. I then upgraded to these wheels and they are solid. I have been anywhere from 280lbs to my current 315lbs and have only had one issue which was caused by my rear deraliur dove into my rear wheel during a race and nicked all of the spokes. They lasted about 8 months after than and finally one of the spokes broke. I am confident that if that had not happened they would still be rolling strong. I have never needed to have them trued.

I realize that you were looking for aero but these are great all around wheels.

ChrisM - 2010-02-21 8:33 PM for race wheels, HED 3, aero and bombproof

I have these fo racing.

Here is a source that I like and sort of agree with:  It's from last July.

I have the Shimano wheels they suggested, and NO problems after thousands of miles.  Never been trued.  I also have a set of vueltas.  Again, aero, and solid.  I will probably buy a set of the neuvation wheels.  Cheap, and plenty of good reviews.

Mavic Cosmic Carbone SL, love em and have had no issues. Great as a day to day wheel and a race wheel especially on courses with wind, they have aero but no too much.

I'm running a set of 36 spoke Velocity Deep-V's and love them. They are not light but they are strong and there is NO flex what so every under my 270 pound butt.
Thinking of getting a disk wheel cover for race days.

For what its worth, I rode with a set of Mavic Askiums until two of the spokes pulled clean through the rear hub in the middle (end for me) of a race.  I was told by my bike guy that Askiums are rated for 185# riders (I was 275# at the time).  I had a set of Open Pros built up with 28/32 spokes and they have been great.

my 300lbs have done 2000 km on a pair of American Classic 420s... they are as good as they were out of the box. nicely light and aero. got them on a run out, but would love to buy another pair as a spare.

For training wheels, I have DT 1.2 rims, DT spokes, Ultegra hubs. For racing, it would be hard to beat the Hed 3.

I have a set of Mavic Aksium Race for my daily training and run an older set of Zipp 440 and 330 tubulars for race day. No problems with either one, but bought the Zipps when i was at 270#, and had them hanging in the garage. The carrot for my weight loss if you will.

I use Williams 30x wheels.  Good value for the money, and have been good for both training and racing.
