Alright, I'm in for the 2010 full. I see there's a handful of us.

I did the half last year and honestly liked this race. My first full, though.

I am in.  Just signed up for the Full Ironman.  It will be my first. Looking forward to doing this.  I have my first Half in May Disney.  I may do one other half before this November race.

I'll be there...

It'll be my third full distance but I've raced the B2B Half the last couple of years, too. I'm planning on a lighter racing schedule for the spring and summer than I've done the last few years - Gulf Coast 1/2 and a few sprints.

B2B has had perfect racing weather for a couple of years - Hoping it can go 3 for 3!

Good luck to all with your training!

Hope all training is going well.  I am 9 weeks away from a HIM Disney and then I turn my attention on my first IM.  Rode 65 today and ran 5 feeling good about the training.  Feel good about the decision to make this my first ironman.

For the others that are on this site and have done this race.  I was looking at the swim times last year and they were very fast.  I think I read the reason was the way the tide came in.  Can anyone add to this?  How much faster were you able to swim than your normal time?

According to the race director if you do not stroke and just let yourself float with the tide you will do the 2.4 MI swim in about 1:20.

Did the full last year---I come from a swimming background sooooo I didn't really even train for the swim...it was my first full and I was sub-45 at a very comfortable effort so yeah it's fast!!!  You'll see various opinions on the assistance---for faster swimmers people say the difference is 10' or less but for slower swimmers the boost is closer to 20'....

Very interesting almost seems like you are cheating yourself.  But for the firstone I will take all the help I can get.  I am a very slow swimmer.

You won't feel like your cheating anything after traveling 140.6 miles  it's still a long day.  With Low tide coming only 18 minutes before the start, I'm thinking you may not see the nice push we had last year.  I'm not all that familiar with tides, but seems like it may take a little bit of time before the flow gets going.

Does anyone know how long it may take for the current to get up to speed?  I'm kinda of curious.

I've never been involved with a swim team but still find that swimming is my best event overall and figured I finished 15-17 minutes sooner then I expected with my 53 minute time.  I did swim a bit harder then planned due to the sun blinding me on the right side, since I normally swim bi lateral to keep my pace in check and ended up just breathing to the left down the first straight away which threw me off a bit.

Well with the start temp in the high 30's the last 2 years and you guys being a week later this year---you may not FEEL anything--nevermind cheated!!!!  I didn't feel cheated by the speed of the swim---it's still 2.4 and you still have to SWIM it if you want out of the water in a decent time....

Masonboro Inlet is where the swim starts, below is the listed tides for Nov 12 and 13.  Didn't look much difference then Wrightsville listing but it's hard to tell with the way it shows on the NOAA site.  Last year I thought low tide was over an hour earlier so the current was moving good when we started and was quite obvious when we swam on the Friday before the race.

Day        High      Tide  Height   Sunrise    Moon  Time      % Moon
           /Low      Time    Feet    Sunset                    Visible

F   12      Low   5:39 AM     0.8   6:41 AM    Rise 12:11 PM      33

N.C. Triathlon ranks among world's best

Triathlon continues to increase in popularity in North Carolina, and now the triathlon world has taken notice of Wilmington's Beach2Battleship Triathlon.

The swim-bike-run competition has been ranked the fifth-best Ironman distance race in the world by Triathlete magazine in its March issue.

Under the heading "Best 140.6-Mile Races," the Editor's Choice Award went to the Ford Ironman World Championship, the only other U.S. race in the top 10. Races in Frankfurt, Germany, and Roth, Germany, were second and third, and a Penticton, British Columbia, race was fourth.

The third edition of the N.C. triathlon and accompanying half triathlon will be held Nov. 13, starting in Wrightsville Beach and ending at the USS North Carolina Battleship Memorial in Wilmington. Proceeds benefit the Wilmington Family YMCA, which conducts the race.

The Beach2Battleship was one of 15 iron-distance triathlons in the United States in 2009. The distance includes a 2.4-mile swim, 112-mile bike ride and a 26.2-mile run.

I'm looking for an autumn 70.3 and the B2B looks like it could be a good one.

Is this really a destination race, or does it have more of a small, community-race feel?  I'll be coming from Chicago and will probably drive, so I'm looking to make sure it is worth the 15 hour drive.  To that end, I'm looking to make sure that this is really a 'unique' race, with good scenery, great organization, that it is well-staffed and has a good vibe. The kind of race where you finish and think 'that was a great race...I can't wait until next year'.

Any input from folks that have done this in years past?

PS- what's the deal with the battleship?  Do you get to start your swim by doing a cannonball off the deck of the ship or something?

That's a toughie..

Personally, the only 1/2IM's I could call 'destination-worthy' would be something like Wildflower or Silverman or Savageman. Driving 15 hours for 4-7hrs of racing is a long ways..

Having said that, if you're looking for a course to PR on, and you don't mind waiting until mid-November for race day, B2BHalf makes a pretty compelling case for itself..When the weather conditions are favorable, and they have been the first two years, this is a quite speedy race. Bike route is not especially scenic, tho..

It's a point to point race - the start is nowhere near the Battleship so no cannonball..

This will be my 3rd B2B, so I'm a fan. Not sure it's worth a drive from Chicago, though.

The wife and I enjoyed our time in Wilmington.  We don't get a chance to get away on our own so this was really a first for us without kids.  We flew in to Myrtle Beach and drove up, Spirit had some real cheap air fare, if that didn't pop up just a few weeks out we would've done the drive from Detroit.

With the race on Saturday (Full), we had Sunday and Monday to enjoy the food and bars of Wilmington.  I thought the downtown area was great with a lot of bar and food choices.  We did a lot of eating and drinking in those two days, and even enjoyed the beach down near Port Fisher on Sunday after the race.  I thought the visit to the Battleship on Monday was great too.  Of course we had pretty good weather to enjoy our time which helped, though the rains from the remnants of hurricane Ike hit late Monday and Tuesday.

The biggest issue I had was the weather in Michigan in Sept and Oct, which wasn't all that nice making some training tough, but that shouldn't be quite as big an issue doing the half and hopefully this fall will be a bit nicer in the Midwest.

I'm sure Wilmington doesn't compare to the choices available in Chicago, but it's a nice town and easy to get around.  I hope to go back some day.

I did B2B last year and my husband did it the year before.  Nice race and nice area, but not a whole lot to do with a 6 and 9 year old during the race.  Battleship tour was neat - for about an hour.

Did you look at Cedar Point?  It's Sept., but my kids are stoked for this one - roller coasters while mom and dad race!

People who have done this race -
1. Where did you stay?  If I go alone will I have trouble getting where I need to be on race day?
2. Is it usually windy on the bike course?

If your on your own, staying at the host hotel would be ideal.  Your close to the packet pickup/expo, you can reserve a spot on the shuttle (setup should send out an email about reserving spots) to T1 on race morning and leave your car at the hotel, when you get done take the trolley or boat which drops you off in front of the hotel.  It's tougher on families to get around then a lone athlete.

You'll take your bike to T1 on Friday afternoon, you can also drop off special needs bags, t1 and t2 bags if you like.

I did the race last year and thought it was great especially for a beginner.  I stayed at shell island on the beach.  Clean and nice enough hotel, great view of the beach and only about 5 - 10 minutes from T1.  You can view more race reports from 2009 and 2008 at  http://www.beginnertriathlete.com/discussion/directory/link-detail.asp?linkid=18091

I did the race solo last year and stayed at the Hampton Inn-University....it worked well for me---about half-way from downtown and the beach---as was mentioned you drop off bike, t1/t2 bags on Fri at beach area.  I just drove downtown to host hotel area on race morning and parked---took provided shuttle to t1....after the race just got on the boat shuttle with all my stuff and crossed the river to where my car was parked...  The hotel was very nice, clean and quiet---the staff was very happy to have us there---asked a bunch of questions when I was checking in because they were "excited" about the race!  It was also a cheaper option then staying at the offical race hotel...
