Subject: Harriman State Park Group Rides on Harryman Course

Hi everyone.  Weather permitting, I want to start riding the Harryman Bike course in mid-March, then again in April and perhaps the beginning of May.  This bike course is very challenging and an excellent way to start training for the 2010 Triathlon Season.  I want to know who would be up for some group rides?

Course Desc: http://www.genesisadventures.com/v4/main.php?left=triathlons&center=harrymantri#The%20Course

Bike course: http://genesisadventures.com/NY%20Bike%20Course%20Map.pdf

I'm racing the Harryman Half in late May, and then Ironman Lake Placid in July -- so I am doing this course in specific prep for those events.  But anyone who wants to get strong on the bike early in the season, I highly recommend this challenging but picturesque course.  Harriman State Park is beautiful, there are often lots of cyclists and people enjoying outside sports, there is very minimal traffic.

I have a 15k Road Race on 3/13 and a Half Marathon on 3/28 ... so I'm going to throw the Weekend of March 20th/21st out there as the first potential weekend to ride.  Hopefully it should be in the mid 50's by then.  Who's in?

Interested in general but March 21 is the NYC Half Marathon so I'm out for that weekend.

Glad to see there is some life out there.   Maybe I won't be riding all by myself.  I'll bump this thread again the week before the weekend of the 20/21 st.  By then we'll be able to see what the Temps are and what the Weather forecast holds.  Here's hoping for sunny and upper 50's!  If it's warm enough I may bring the family (wife, 4-yr-old daughter & six-year-old son) and have them picnic in the park, so if anyone has little one's that want playmates.

Charlie, you working that Sunday??

Anyone have any longer routes that start at the park? I heard you could ride up to Bear Mountain and West Point from the park.

This should be a hilly enough route. Says over 2000 feet of climbing:

has anyone done the roads off of the main inner loop? the hills look cool, but how are the quality of the roads?

Yo, DC--when it opens up, I'm in for a ride! (I'm slow as molasses, though, so I'm also entirely prepared to be dropped).

I'm in also.  I completed the olympic tri (turned in bi-athlon due to fog) last May and the biking was very tough.  29 miles, which included 2 loops of a long very steep hill.  ready to conquer the hill once again.  I'm training for the Cheaspeake iron man in Maryland this Sept.

The Harriman Olympic was my 2nd Triathlon ever... my first being a mini-Sprint.  That BIKE course kicked my a$$!!  This year I want to be prepared, mentally and physically. Mentally: by pre-riding the race course we will become intimate with the SUFFERING that is the brutal 2-mile climb ; Physically: taking on that climb will make us stronger each time out and prepare our legs for Race Day.  Given the day and the conditions, I would like to climb it at least 4 times!!

I'll found out the first weekend the park opens and post a potential Ride Date.  Make sure to eat lots of HTFU the night before.  I kid, but not really!!

We are tentatively planning a ride for Sunday the 11th.  Check the official Harryman thread.  I'd post the link but my cut & paste isn't working for some odd reason.

I heard that part of the Harriman course is closed due to the weather.  I believe that Tiorati Brook Road is closed so the long downhill is out.  The RD informs that the course will be changed to 3 loops on Lake Welch Drive and Seven Lakes Drive?

That's correct. There are two cables across the road, but there doesn't appear to be any obvious damage to road that causes problems with the ride. We just went under / around each of the cables, as did a lot of riders.

yeah same here. I am really puzzled as to why its still closed. it was kinda cool riding with no cars for a bit!

I know this blog is for the Harryman, but I plan to do the Lake Sebago tri on 6/13/10.  I went to check out the course this weekend (5/8/10) and Lake Tiorati is still closed.  I called the state park commision and they said that they have bridge work to do and are trying to get funding.  Looks like the route will need to be changed.  I tried calling the number on the Lake Sebago organizers web page, but only get an answering machine.  Can anyone confirm what the official route will be?

I've never been up to Harriman, but I plan on going up on Saturday. I hear there is a 14 mile loop in the park that is a good challenge. Does anyone know if the closures that are posted on this site effect the loop?

sorta...its Tiorati Brooke rd that is "closed"....closed as in closed to car traffic since there are barriers. On the bike you can get around them. There is a bridge that is unsafe (to car traffic?) on that road somewhere, I have no idea where, so bike at your own risk.
