Started swimming a few weeks ago after a lifetime of being the occasional swimmer every so often. In short, jumped from the couch into the pool.

Going with the 0-700 plan, which leads up to the 0-1650, as suggested on one of the threads. To even start the plan, one has to swim 100 meters, rest for 12 breaths, and do it again and again and again. In short, 400.

So how is it going? When I started, I would finish 100 meters, and gasp for a minute or two (forget 12 breaths), trying to remember how to breath and wondering if I am dying.

This was a few weeks ago, and I have been swimming day on, day off.

Today: Progressed with the plan. Swam the 4x100 with 12 breaths, then did the 4x50 with 8 breaths, and then the 4x25, with 4 breaths. Altogether, 700 meters, without breathing heavily. Then did 50 with a kickboard, and had to go pick up the kids from pre-school.

No questions to ask, but I am DAMN happy with the improvement, and wanted to share. Laughing

Ron, your story is a deja vu for me, as recent as last week. I've been doing that same swimming program as you mentioned. Weeks 1 & 2 went great, then I had a meltdown on Week 3, which was last week and didn't go back to the pool all week...on purpose. Anyway, see this post I did last night on my blog as I think you'd find it encouraging to read: http://my140point6milejourney.blogspot.com/2010/02/yep-that-me-up-there-in-middle.html
Keep up the progress!

You guys are depressing me.  I posed a question a few weeks back wondering whether or not I was just a hopeless swimmer.  I'm coming to the conclusion the answer is "yes".  I'm glad someone else is succeeding.  Oh well, I guess there's always duathlons.

Usually the huffing and puffing is from using bad technique. Find a decent coach and get instant improvement.

Keep going with the volume of swimming you're doing and you'll eventually start seeing results.  Find a Masters swim club, or a technique class and you will see improvement faster.  Don't get discouraged, it's too early in the season for that.

x2.  You seem to be putting the volume in, so maybe it's a technique thing.  I am a type of person that needs to be shown the correct way, not just told how to do it.  I found this sight last week, saw what I was supposed to be doing, and it made a huge difference.  Maybe this will help a bit.  Good luck.

I did. It turns out that I need to raise the elbow a bit more, and make sure the fingers enter the water first, but besides that, the technique is surprisingly good.

I think the breathing problems were more to do with jumping from the couch to the pool and trying too hard.

You're not alone Patrick.  I've been at it for over a month now and have yet to see real improvement.  I've read & watched tons of stuff, but it's hard to tell if what I'm doing is correct.  Obviously it's not otherwise I would have improved by now..lol.  I have 3 lessons left out of a 8 lesson package, and according to the 20 yo instructor, my form is good.
