That's a pretty solid time, great job.

If it's any consolation...Me and my buddy are collegiate swimmers and we agreed to do an open water race last summer.  I finished the race in about the time I expected and couldn't find my friend anywhere.  He came in like 15 minutes later...he had gotten out ahead of the field and was swimming alone, and somehow managed to get turned around and actually was swimming back towards the starting line for a while until somebody in the back of the pack tapped him on the head and told him to turn around.  He finally came in well behind his goal time.

Long story short, it can happen to anybody, don't let it get you down.

Can I trade run splits with you?

That was clearly a very competitive field - browsing numbers from races here in CA, that's a solid finish for a first tri with a 750m swim.

And, dude, you did it! How many people can say they're tough enough to complete that sort of ordeal?

getfitfast - 2010-02-28 1:10 AM - Need some motivation and cheering up!

Well.... you didn't meet your goal.

I've had the same post-race funk.

But I think the best thing by far for motivation, is to immediately set yourself towards the next goal.  Learn from this one.  You know what you did wrong, right?

Start fixing it, and set yourself fully towards meeting your next goal.

Cheers!

Yes, you ar ARE a triathlete!  Most people's first race - particularly nonswimmers - is a train wreck.  My first swim was more of a controlled drown.  The bike, it was off road, and I had never ridden an MT before.  Not good.  But I did pass a woman in her early 80s in te finishing shute so that was nice.

Stick with it.  You put up a solid run time and the rest will come.  keep working and you'll do great.  Enjoy your new adiction

Hello

You are a triathlete.  Now train to improve the areas you were weak in and go again.

Go you! Working on the navigation takes a while, but is definitely worth it once it's part of your OWS technique. Bravo on finishing your first tri-- good luck and have fun on your next one!

Congrats on finishing your fist tri.  It looks like you trained 4ish months for it.  And you did fine.  The first one is to finish it and to teach you what to work on for the next one.  Triathlon is a lifestyle, it takes years to get functional in it if you are not blessed with specific God given speed.  It does look like you had a tough field to compete in.  If I ever finish last at Kona, that would be fine.  You have to look at who you are comparing yourself to.  Did you race faster than your practice times?  If no... what do you need to adjust.  Welcome to the game, keep at it you wil get better.  I bet you do better in your next race.

First Oly swim was a big disappointment.  I didn't think I could possibly go slower, but in my next Oly I was five minutes slower than the first one.  It took a few races over a couple seasons, but I learned to navigate and brought my race times down to where I expected them to be.  You can do the same - you just need to practice.  IIRC, no one is born with open-water navigation skills.

Just for reference there is a sprint around my parts that, given your times, you would have finished 260th/400 or so.  The level of athlete must have been quite good at your particular race.

No doubt the only way to go is up.  You have the capability to cut that swim time in half given time and practice.  No doubt you are going to get faster on the bike, and probably pretty quickly.  If you ride consistently throughout the year there is no doubt you will me much faster next year.  The run time is already pretty good - next race when you are a bit faster on the swim and bike you'll be amongst a group that will be fading and you will pass lots and lots of folks.

Nearly last out of 500 particpants?

What do they call the guy who finishes at the bottom of his med-school class?

Doctor!

As long as you weren't making life for your mate/family/dog miserable over those 10 minutes, be proud of what you've accomplished.

OMG...that is a funny post. I liked the "controlled drowning" and the "I passed an 80 yo lady".

Like so many have said, you're a triathlete.  And that must have been a crazy field because your times were fine - a sub 25 5k run?  I'd trade in a heart beat.

My first (and only) tri swim was also a navigational nightmare.  A kayaker/lifeguard actually cut me off and pointed out the race was the other way.

You're a triathlete! Sure, you could probably improve your time - if you weren't serious about improving, you wouldn't be a triathlete, and you wouldn't be on this forum. You know what makes this a cool sport, at least in my limited experience? It's an individual competition - you against the clock. Once you start, no one can help you on the swim, bike, or run. It's a race against yourself. Sure, some people try to win a stand on the podium at the end of the race. The other 99% of triathletes look at the results and first compare them to their pre-race goals... just like you did. The place rankings come secondary to that. The difference between this and other sports - I can pull up next to some semi-pro and his $4000 bike, park my POS, and have a nice chat and get some free and friendly advice. He has nothing to lose by offering advice - it's an individual race. So there really aren't any secrets or gimmicks. There's no backstabbing. Race day is a thousand individuals who share the love of self improvement. Welcome to the club, it seems that you fit right in!

Thanks mate..appreciate the vote of motivation....

I guess we all go into a race with an expectation and it is natural to feel disappointed when we don't achieve it...

From a personal perspective..I was anti sport all my life...shy, intimidated, weak Indian kid growing up in English public schools. Friend and I would vouch to come last together in cross-country..

It was only when I turned 42 that I picked up running. 44 this month. Only had a bike 5 months..never had one as a kid and same with swimming..learning from scratch...

I have achieved heaps in a short time..but coming last and leaving the water reminded me of my childhood of coming last in races..felt crap...but put into context...it was a huge achievement...

I'm sure there are plenty other here with a similar story....
