Interesting thread,

I don't take anything, but I was thinking about picking up a bottle of BSN  Syntha 6, since my local gym has it on sale nearly half off.

I used a lot of them (weight lifting b4)...

Nowadays I go simple:

60g whey prot
30c oatmeal
30c dextrose
bcaa

Do they work?

YES THEY DO!

I generally use chocolate milk, it's got the right protein/carbs ration and tastes good.  Did a 10 mile run this weekend when I was on vacation and didn't have my regular 1% milk and syrup.  Headed to gas station and picked up a quart of chocolate whole milk...like drinking motor oil, but sweeter. What a change.

My understanding is that you need to consume the recovery drink within 30 minutes of the exercise for best results.

I generally only use a recovery drink after a really hard or really long workout, 40+ miles on the bike and 9+ miles running.

My website is doing a review series on recovery drinks.  To date, we've tested Hammer Recoverite and it's a really tasty product.  We won't finish the entire series until the end of the month, but we're comparing Hammer Recoverite, Fluid Recovery, GU Recovery Brew, and 2:1:1 from Optimum Nutrition.

Cheers,

Eric

Don't really use any of the products.  I nearly always have a latte after my long run. There's a starbucks nearby so it makes it the carrot to make the last few miles go by faster.  It's such a great treat after - I know the coffee part isn't that great but it is mostly low-fat milk.  In the winter it's a hot drink and in the summer something iced.  so very good!

I don't know about calling it a "recovery" drink, but I usually take a balance of protein and carbs after I work out.  For reference I'm around 170-175 and 6'0".  I haven't gotten my current lean mass measured in long enough to tell you.  I put around 40g of protein + carbs after I lift and also do it after swimming and biking and some runs.  I don't do it on all runs because I don't think I'm training hard enough in the run yet for it to make a difference.

Also, green gatorade is not an original flavor (therefore, not old). The originals I remember are fruit punch, lemon-lime, and orange. I'm sure I'm missing though...

Personally my stomach does a lot better with real food after a workout. My favorite is a fruit smoothy with OJ in it with whey added (fresh fruit or frozen). Tastes good and gets me calories from carbs and protien right after a workout. I'm a big proponent of using a good balanced diet to get what you need along with to a mild supplement (what I consider whey). I would do chocolate milk but as of late me and milk are not friends (I think I'm turning lactose intolerant Frown).

This is just what has worked well for me over the last 2ish years.

I only have a recovery drink after a long run (at least two hours) or after a long race (half marathon/marathon, maybe a sprint tri). The only reason I drink them is because I'm often starving when I'm done but it can take an hour or more to get my appetite back. I usually just drink regular Gatorade or Powerade, sometimes chocolate milk. I have no idea if it actually helps with "recovery" -- it's just to keep me from feeling the effects of major hunger (shaky, headachy, tired, etc.).

I use Endurox4 after a workout of atleast 1.5 hours, sometimes after just an hour on the run. I dont use them after the swim. I never used one other than Gatorade until a couple years ago and it makes a HUGE difference for me, especially on harder and longer training days of 2-4 hours.

Chocolate Milk if over an hour.  Sometimes use Slim Fast. At a race I take whatever they offer.

Accelerade plus a scoop of whey protein per 12oz plus 12oz plain water.  Gives me electrolytes & ~18g protein & fluid.  More protein in single shot & I get cramps.

Choc milk is great- unless you're lactose intolerant

I've been using Ultragen and it has really helped with recovery.  Was hard on the stomach the first week but since then it has been great!

Another vote for UltraGen by First Endurance. I had previously used chocolate milk and EAS whey protein powder and I started using Ultragen this winter. I think this stuff really works. It has a mix of protein, amino acids, glutamine and it compared to the other two recovery drinks I tried I have alot more pop in my legs the day after a hard workout. I use it after any workout longer than an hour.
I took a series of pre UltraGen "baseline" data (40 K TT, 120 BPM baseline ride- 90 min) and I have seen a noticable improvement both these areas this winter. Is it all due to the UltraGen? Probably not but I think it helps.

Downside it does have a bit of a chaulky taste which took a little while to get used to. This company also provide nutritional products for Team Astana (Alberto Contador) and Team Columbia (Mark Cavendish), and a number of top pro triathletes such as Mike Lavato and Jordan Rapp all of who endorse their products including UltraGen.

I've never used any special recovery drinks. For long rides I mix up mineral water and fruit juice. After long runs I usually eat a full meal or else lots of fruits and mineral water and/or kephir.

Since these have always been enough for me I do not plan on using any recovery drinks.

I was using chocolate milk, first the one with the bunny.  Than I switched to ovaltine.  I am now trying Endurox.  I am only a few times into the Endurox, so I have not formed a strong opinion on that yet.  I try to get the recovery drink soon as I get done.  Than after about an hour I have a Whey protien/milk mix.

One thing I stay away from is anything Powerbar, makes me sick....barf on the bike type sick.  Which can really suck on a trainer in your basement.

The next few months for me are going to be try different prodcuts out.  I need to find that mixture of both during and after race nutrition that does not make me barf.

Joe

Any drugstore carries Lactaid and likely a cheaper store brand.  I'm moderately lactose intolerant (pizza or ice cream is fine, straight milk is not the best idea).  I chew a couple tablets before scarfing my recovery drink and I'm fine.

I drink 2 cups of skim milk with a scoop of soy or protein powder mixed in after almost every workout.  It's about 40 g of protein.  Since I don't eat much meat I need that source of protein, plus it helps spread the protein out throughout the day.

The thought of drinking chocolate milk right after a long workout makes me want to vomit. Wish I didn't feel that way b/c it would be cheap.

Put one vote up for Endurox R4 in fruit punch flavor for me. It is the only one I'v tried but I really like it. Tastes good, seems to keep me feeling better the rest of the day since almost all of my long workouts are between 5 and 8 in the morning.

I'm another for using chocolate milk as my recovery drink. Lately its been 6-8ozs of Horizon low fat organic chocolate milk mainly because I like the taste and it's cheap compared to "real" recovery drinks.

JohnnyKay - 2010-03-04 12:39 PM I use chocolate milk.

It is cheap, easy and has both carbs & protein.

Sure it helps.
But I could eat or drink something else too.  You just need to refuel.  The "packaging" is not so important for most of us.

I use it whenever I want to.  If I'm going to get a good meal shortly after a workout then I'm less likely to grab some.  If I'm going to grab a quick snack and run out the door to catch my train, then there's a good chance I'll down a glass with my snack.

x4 and I add a bit of protien in there if my workout was long (2 +hrs)  I've been known to throw in a couple spoon fuls of nutella in there as well!

After a hard workout my stomach can't handle solid food for a while, so I'll go with either orange juice plus protein powder or Infinit with a scoop of protein powder. (I don't care for chocolate milk at all.)

I think it helps me a lot. I've noticed that I'm not nearly as sore the next day if I have the recovery drink rather than waiting until I can eat.

Yes!!!  I'm not the only one who uses slim fast!

milk + vanilla slim fast powder + cocoa powder + banana = GREAT snack, esp when I'm feeling I need a chocolate fix!

I use Endurox R4 for workouts over an hour.  I'll use either chocolate milk alone or skim milk with a scoop of whey for workouts under an hour.  These really work for me.  When I first started in tri, I didn't do anything for recovery and I was tired all the time and my second workout in a day really suffered.  That is not the case anymore.
