Subject: Recovery Drinks?
I've used the ProBar Recovery Drink mix in the past and loved it. I also have tried a recovery mix from GNC which seemed to work.  I recently went to our local running store and they only had Clif Shot Recovery mix.  It seems like it has a lot of sugar.  I've googled to try to get some independent analysis of this product versus others but can't find anything.  Does anyone have any info/experience  about this product or any 'rules of thumb" to guide when purchasing recovery drink products.  As a 50 year old woman who came into triathloning 2 years ago after an adult life of inactivity, I swear by the recovery drink mixes--it makes a huge difference for next day training. I like Heed Recoverite or a local milk/soy protien beverage.  Both seem to make a difference in how my body feels the next day.  I try and avoid sugary drinks.

Here is a recovery drink review written by the coach of my team (disclaimer: who also runs this sports nutrition retailer).  Personally I'm using Gu Brew now.

Chocolate milk works well as it has 4/1 carbs/protein like other expensive recovery drinks and is much cheaper.

Personally, unless it is not easy (after a race) or I don't feel like real food (following a really hard workout) I will just eat some real food within 30 minutes of finishing the workout.  I'll try to get some carbs and protein but don't really worry about ratios.

For other times, I have tried different products (Powerbar Recovery (drink or bar), Endurox and Gu) and unless someone is giving it to me, I will just stick with chocolate milk.

I started using Endurox for workouts over 1-1.5 hours only a couple years ago but immediately saw the benefits. Would love to drink chocolate milk but I have a reflux issue with it.

Resurrecting an old thread here rather than starting a new one.

I went to Vitamin Shoppe and asked about recovery drinks and ended up buying basic whey protein powder.  My question for the group is after a hard swim/bike brick, or any triathlon workout, am I doing myself any good by mixing a protein shake at the gym that ends up with about 30 g protein and 8 g or less carb?  I think the salesman must have thought I was asking about weight lifting recovery even though I specified endurance.

Deciding whether to junk the stuff, whether to keep it and use in a blender at home when I have the time and fruit to make a more proper recovery drink, and what to do at the gym, if anything.

Bottom line - does it HURT to drink a protein shake after a swim, bike, or run?

A good recovery beverage is 2 calories of carb per your pound of body weight and about half that of protein.  A gram of carb and a gram of protein each have 4 calories.  So, for example, if you're 120 pounds and are doing a hard workout of an 60-90 minutes or more, you'll probably want to recover with 240 cals of carb (60 grams) and 120 cals of protein (30 grams).  If you're not having a "real food" meal within 20 minutes or so, that is.

That sounds like more than enough protein and not enough carbs to me (not to mention no electrolyte replacement).  I wouldn't chuck the stuff- it won't hurt- but you'd do better to make a Recovery drink from those targeted at endurance athletes.  Protein drinks are better if you need extra calories or did a tough hills, weights, or muscular endurance workout.  Not as necessary after a normal swim, bike, or run.

I've used whey protein powder mixed with carb/electrolyte drink as a recovery drink.  Especially good when it's orange drink and vanilla flavored protein powder.  It's very convenient to pre-measure and mix dry carb drink powder with protein powder and keep it in a baggie to mix with a bottle of water post-race.

Love chocolate milk whenever possible.  I have been using Endurox R4 for several months and really like for the longer workouts.  Taste is ok and I can really feel the benefits.

Chocolate milk and a scoop of muscle milk banana flavor is ridiculously good.

Hammer Recoverite is the best out there and it's easy on the stomach, awesome, and not loaded with all that sugar that you would typically find in all the heavily marketed drinks.

I also second Recoverite. I like the chocolate and my boyfriend prefers the strawberry.
