I'm looking at racing my first olympic distance tri, and I was hoping to find a good race in the metroplex.  Anybody out there have any recommendations?  Looks like there is only a few options...

I've done the US Open in Oct 2 years now and would recommend it.

The others I have no experience with.

I'd recommend one of the Playtri races; Platri Festival or Stonebridge Ranch.

Stonebridge course can get crowded sometimes because of the multi-loop bike and sprint race going on at the same time.

US Open in October is fun because it's the biggest race in the Metroplex. The point to point bike, I think, is cool and different. Plus all the pros are there racing for decent money which is always entertaining.

I'm not a fan of the Dallas Athletes races so I won't mention those, but they'll be brought up shortly.

Playtri Festival is the only olympic distance race in DFW until you get to US Open at the very end of the season.

Neither of the Dallas Athletes "olympic" races are advertised as the correct distance to make them olympic so they're glorified sprints.  And Tom makes all his swims short on top of that.

Stonebridge is a hair short on the bike course so it's just a really long sprint as well.

But I'm getting technical now.

Go down to Austin for CapTex.  It's a proven winner.  Unless of course Jonny signs up so the race gets rained out.

Don't tempt me.

(actually I'm not doing captex this year; decided to spend that money elsewhere)

Is that an exaggeration on the Texas Man/Amica; I was looking at this for my 1st Oly, but I don't want to shell out the $$$ AND get a false sense of confidence.

Yes he is right about disco and texasman. I like DA but both of those races are short on the bike course and advertised as so. I know the disco swim was short of the full oly distance too. However after my experence with the dodging people on katy trail and going over mega pot holes on the US Open, I tihnk i will take the short course.

My feedback on the U.S. Open is clouded by the absolutely miserable weather we had to race in. I was freezing and wet. No sun. Not a fun day at all.

an Oly is 1500 M E T E R S  swim,,, DA swims are advertised at 1500 YARDS  and as noted they are usually 100-150 yards short, which they admit at the practice session the day before the race

Thanks for the comments!  I appreciate the input.  Guess I haven't raced in the metroplex since '07, so I really look forward to doing it again!

Looking for a real time, just to chalk it off my list of things to do.  So I'm gonna hit up PlayTri.

No joke! raining and 52 degrees at 7am was not what i was hoping for for my first tri.  I dont remember that many potholes however I do remember the "BUMP" sign right as the guy ahead of me got about a foot of air.

I'm in with Spranger. The tri in Bridgeport was the WiseTri. Http://www.wisetri.com. It was a lot of fun and well organized, even though the weather was similar to what we had at the Toyota US Open tri. It was a small group overall, but I hope that builds. The smaller numbers made it a lot less intimidating, as that was my first attempt at an Olympic distance. It's a little out of the way for the Metroplex folks, but they did have a packet pick up in Plano.

I thought that the swim and run were fine for the Toyota Open. The bike route was riddled with pot holes and crappy roads.... just my opinion.. It is the only Olympic that I have done though...

Too bad they picked the same weekend as Prairieman. They could've picked the weekend after and not conflicted with any other races in the metroplex that I can find.

Besides Jack talking for way to long (which is typical with Ironhead) this race is really good.  Waco did a good job with it. They had the Brazos clean--most felt the swim was long, but not bad, bike is mostly flat and fast and good pavement, and the run for the sprint is fairly flat...for the Oly you will hit some challenging hills, but good.  If I haven't moved yet, I'll be at this one.  Not the metroplex, but a good race and Waco really puts out a decent race.
