Subject: 1st Race of 2010, I'm nauseous

I'm a slow fat triathlete. It's irritating but there it is. I love the thrill of a race and I love what the training has done for my body and my lifestyle. But it really sucks when you've logged 10+ hours of your week in exercise and have cut your calories to slightly below budget and then you're still slow. At least I will finish and at least I will not be dead last. But one time, just once, I want to hit a decent PR.

Maybe this isn't my race. Maybe I haven't peaked yet. But this weightloss battle and racing mentality have got me feeling anxious, nauseous, and pissed. Some how I'll suck it up and use it on race day.

Wish me luck St. Patty's Day Triathlon 3/14/2010.

Hang in there swyzzel, speed will come with time (it took me 3 years to start learning to run fast). It's normal to be nervous, have a great time and welcome to BT.

Thanks guys. Feeling better after picking up my race packet. Everybody's super nice and so encouraging. They made it fun and were so happy to see me again this year, 40 pounds lighter. After all it is a St. Patty's race so there's pancakes and beer at the end. I know, I shouldn't reward myself with food but it is a GREAT motivator. Plus triathlete people are so much fun. I get so pumped  just being around them.

I will enjoy kicking off my tri season.

Have a great weekend everybody!

Just keep doing what your doing.  I was sick to my stomach prior to my first race this year as well.  Turned out I had a great run and it went nothing like it did in my head the night before.  Congrats on your progress so far as well.

Somehow picking up that race packet always calms me, too.  Enjoy the race and the pancakes and beer afterwards!!  All of them may kickstart your body into shedding more pounds.  Congrats on a great job so far!!

Hello all thanks for the support and encouragement. It was a beautiful weekend in Dallas and the race was great. Even with the spring forward time change and the 4AM wake up call I was pumped for race day. I blasted my race day CD in the car on the ride over and managed to get down half a banana and pb sandwich. After transition setup, race marking, and the time chip, I got in a warm up jog and stretched.

I've never done an indoor pool start so I didn't realize there was at least an hour wait before my swim. So a snack here would have been nice. Will remember this for the Caveman Tri in April. I used this time to talk with others about their training and 2010 goals. This relaxed me A LOT b/c even leaner, fitter triathletes can't swim or climb hills on the bike or run the fastest.

When it was finally time for me to swim, I decided to take it nice and easy and let people pass me. I couldn't believe it though. I was passing a lot of people and I wasn't even exerting myself. The bike ride had 2 major hills one after another so that wasn't so fun. But I was determined not to walk it so I concentrated on the pull up and hamstrings. The run was killer. My feet were completely numb and I didn't get feeling back until 2 miles in. I finished strong and everybody was super supportive yelling "just around the corner" "keep going" "almost there" the whole way.

I got a medal, pancakes, and beer. Definitely well earned.

RESULTS: swim 8:17.8, t1 3:44.2, bike 1:01:05.0, t2 1:56.2, run 42:31.7, total 1:57:35.1
300 meter swim, 12 mile bike, 5k run

I think I should focus on weightloss and then being a faster runner. What do you think?

I read a Dallas half marathoner died that day in the Rock n Roll half. He was only 32. I'm thankful that I have a found a sport I love but this is a wake up call to get my heart checked. So sad.

I think you did terrific on your race and you should feel very proud of yourself.

I have lost all but the last few pounds and I am still slow.  Not exactly the encouragement you are looking for, but I think the weight loss comes first.  Many people gain a lot speed on weight loss alone, but it looks like I will have to do some actual speedwork for that to happen (if it will even happen).  Remember, the races are really for fun and to show off the training, unless you are planning to go pro, podium, and walk away with a big purse.  Weight loss is our life, our health, our longevity, everything.

Congrats on your success Leah. What are you doing to break thru those last few pounds?

I was reading somewhere that I shouldn't even attempt speed work until I lose the weight. I just add it in to break up the monotony. Would love to get a 12 minute mile this year.

I love your motto. My chiro says weight loss is a journey not a race. And I liked that other guys motto on BT about progress not perfection. These are great mantras for those tough training days.

I have no intention of going pro.  I started this to kick start my weight loss and become an athlete when many thought I couldn't. Now that I've got 2 finisher medals, I'm ready to get 2 more this year.
