The ING Georgia Marathon & Half Marathon
50F / 10C
Precipitation
Total Time = 3h 52m 20s
Overall Rank = 441/2141
Age Group = M30-34
Age Group Rank = 68/220
Pre-race routine:

Stayed at the Omni hotel the night before, but routine was pretty much the same. Woke up, drank coffee, at breakfast and got ready for the race.
Event warmup:

A little walking around to find the right corral and then waiting for the start.
Run
  • 3h 52m 20s
  • 26.2 miles
  • 08m 52s  min/mile
Comments:

Felt really good and was on pace through about 16. Hit the hills coming back towards town and the legs didn't respond well. I have trained on some pretty hilly routes, but nothing like this. I guess my legs just weren't ready for the changes in elevation. ITs tightened up, but didn't hurt. They just wouldn't leg my legs move faster than 10 minute miles, so I took it and shuffled on in for a PR.
What would you do differently?:

Train on some more hills?
Post race
Warm down:

Grabbed some pretzels from medical tent and warmed up a bit. Then proceeded to walk around for about 45 minutes due to all of all of the barricades trying to get back to the hotel which was all of 50 feet away. Finally made it back to the hotel and showered to warm up and stretched a bit.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Hills. I think they caused the quads to tighten to the point that BOTH ITs tightened up. I tried a couple of times to pick up the pace back to normal, but they were having none of that. Couldn't run faster than a 10ish minute mile for the last 8 miles.

Event comments:

Great race, just wish there was a way to limit some of the barricades or at least let those that have raced through some super secret paths. It's tough to weave your way around for an extra couple miles to find people after finishing the race.

Course: Loop through a lot of the Atlanta 'hoods. Pretty good scenery despite the weather. Hills, hills, and more hills. Garmin shows in the neighborhood of 4700 feet of climbing (taking out the anomalies). That's about twice the amount of climbing on my previous long runs.

I am afraid of the ING marathon course.  That should tell you something.

Now focus on the IM.  You definitely have the fitness to go much faster.

We are a long way from Chicago!  What a difference a few years make.  Nice PR BTW.  It's a tough course that demands respect.  You did well and overcame adversity.  Well done.
