Total Time = 1h 16m 23s
Overall Rank = 129/387
Age Group = 40-44
Age Group Rank = 22/33
Pre-race routine:

Couple of breakfast bars, 2 12 oz bottles of water
Set up transition
Event warmup:

Ran 1/2 mile w/pick ups
Swam approx 300 yd warm up
Swim
  • 16m 14s
  • 880 yards
  • 01m 50s / 100 yards
Comments:

Not a great swim, I had only been in the pool once in the past 2 weeks because of vacation & it showed. I do like sprints w/swimming distances of 1/2 mile more than the 1/4 mile races.
What would you do differently?:

I'm getting back on schedule!
Transition 1
  • 01m 7s
Comments:

The previous evening I practiced trying to keep shoes clipped & placing feet on the shoes, getting up to speed & then putting feet into the shoes. It didn't go well after several attempts so I stayed w/slipping on the shoes, running out of T1 & then jumping on the bike & clipping in.
What would you do differently?:

I want to practice that technique & use in an upcoming race.
Bike
  • 37m 57s
  • 14 miles
  • 22.13 mile/hr
Comments:

The work on the bike is showing results...that's the fastest pace I've carried through an entire race.
What would you do differently?:

Keep pushing the bike training.
Transition 2
  • 00m 52s
Comments:

I think I've got this T2 thing down. At about 100 yds I pulled both feet out of the shoes & pedaled on top of shoes & then dismounted swinging right leg over to left pedal. Grabbed my running visor & race belt & got on wih the run.
**I ranked 93rd/387 overall in Transition times so, while others did the run or bike or both faster, my overall time was better because of transition.
Run
  • 20m 12s
  • 2.6 miles
  • 07m 46s  min/mile
Comments:

I'm not sure I believe the distance declared matched the real distance run here...I've never done a sub 8 min/mile pace but, it was only 2.6 miles so, who knows? The overall winner posted a 5 min pace...
I didn't feel very good on the run, my heart v-tacked once (Shot to 200 bpm) so I had to walk for about 30 secs. It hasn't done this in quite some time & I think it's due to reduced training time the past 2 weeks.
Post race
Warm down:

Met my wife & son, my son was there from the start, he's my biggest if only fan. I love hearing his encouragement at each transition.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Reduced training schedule over the past 2 weeks. I looked at this race as manily a training exercise to get back into racing. I haven't raced since St Anthony's except for doing the swim piece of a sprint tri relay in May. Felt good to race again & I've got a full race calendar from now until my 1/2 IM in Oct including another Oly.

Event comments:

Couple of things I didn't like:
1- 20 minute delayed start because the generator used for the microphone was not working & they had to get another...why not just use a bullhorn with a field of only 300 to 400? I had done a warm up swim only to get into the water more than 30 minutes later.
2 - Lack of swim bouys, only 1 bouy at the midpoint made navigation not difficult but I kept looking up more than usual to see if I was on course.
3 - Lack of transition area security. Nobody verified markings & bikes & after 2/3 of field was in there were no volunteers posting the bike entry side. In fact, the announcer kept saying transition is still closed yet several atheletes were in there collecting belongings & getting in the way of other finishers. Not safe & definitely not secure....I plan on letting them know this!

Sounds like you had a great race all around! Killer bike pace, and a fast run. I'm going to need a push truck to keep up if you run like that at Clermont.
