I am sure this issue has been addressed already. Can anyone tell me if USAT allows the use of the Vibram Five Fingers shoes during the swim portion Section 4.9 of the USAT rule book states:

4.9 Illegal Equipment. Any swimmer wearing any artificial propolsion device, including but not limited to fins, gloves, paddles, or floaying devices of any kind shall be disqualified.

My guess would be they are considered a type of glove. I am not sure if someone can clarify?

LOL, why on earth would you want to use VFF's for the swim?  They're not fins =)  Plus, you have to BIKE after the swim, not run so you have to take them off anyway.  Am I missing something?  What's the advantage to wearing them?

not sure whether they are legal or not.

But I think the OP is asking in relevance to OWS starts. I wear my 5fingers when I'm training in open water... too much debris at the bottom of TN's rivers/lakes.

I would think they would make your feet float on the surface of the water. That wouldn't be very good for your body position.

Why is that not good for body position?

I actually think you would have the opposite issue.  I own the KSOs and there is no drain plug.  I suspect they would fill up with water that doesn't move through the sole very well.  That would weight down your feet.  I don't know if other models offer any adaptations that would allow the free flow of water.

If the OP is hoping to wear them to keep the feet warm, I don't think they would accomplish that at all.

I do not own a pair nor have I swam in a pair of the VFF. I have a few friends that completed the Half in New Orleans last year and said  they cut their feet pretty bad when they exited the water. There are lots of shells on the bottom in Lake P. I was just looking for a way to protect my feet.

I don't think they give you any advantage so I suspect they'd be allowed.  I suspect they'd slow you down...

My wife asked me the same question recently. She wears them for running. She is doing her first sprint tri this Summer. Her bike just has clips and toe cages. She wanted to just keep them on the entire race.
