Subject: Shepparton HIM : Official Thread

Hi everyone!

Just wondering if there is anyone else out there planning to do the Shepparton HIM on the 14/11...

I am originally from Shepp, so I am aiming for this one to prove a point. I haven't even done an Olympic distance, and I admit it's ambitious... but I am pretty certain I can do anything I set my mind to. Just need a goal to keep me focused!!

I am a bit of a newbie, and a completely trashy runner... Swimming is my strongest leg, pity it's the shortest!!

So, I guess I'd just like to hear from the others planning to do it, so I feel like I'm not alone!!

I'll probably come back asking you all for advice and things too, lol.

Thanks :)

Hey there, some advice for completing a Half Ironman.

Complete lots of long slow distance over winter at an Aerobic Level (usually 70-80%). Work up to completing 110% race distance over about 15 weeks at this level, and you be will fine when it comes to your race specific training.

I am about to complete my 3rd Half Ironman over here at Busselton but hope to be moving over to Victoria sometime soon. I have plans for doing the whole series so will be joining you at Shepparton. If you have any questions, feel free to ask. I am no expert but have been in Triathlons since 1993 so I can offer advice from my experiences.

Thanks Chocky, I appreciate it

I plan to do a few other events (running, cyling) as well, and I'm just planning to finish.
I've got a friend who's convinced me to do Geelong as well, next year, so I will just make sure that I can finish Shepp (mostly to prove a point) and then improve it all in Geelong.

The main problem is going to be my running. Chances of me walking a lot of it? Pretty high
But also, chances are if I can spend a lot of time over winter running in the rain, I should be pretty good. I hate the cold, so if I can run in Winter, I can run in spring, right?

I have a friend doing Busselton as well. Good luck with it

Swimming will keep you in good stead for Shep, it was made non wetsuit last year it was amazing how many panicked about it and or put in very poor swim times.  I know one guy at least that DNFd on the day and I put alot of it down to his panic about the swim before the race had even started.  It will be a 50 / 50 chance of being non wetsuit there in any year.

205 days to go, plenty of time to get your running up a bit.  Your welcome to come down to Frankston some time and do some training around olivers / humphries hill with me.  Shep is fairly flat but I find the training in the hills helps with overall running.  Got a really good 16km course that has a few hills in it which help with getting ready.

I heard from the Tri club yesterday, and it's filling really fast due to no event in Geelong apparently.

I have been having doubts (mostly from external sources) and not sure I should enter now. I am still working on my running, and whats the worst thing that could happen? I don't finish?

What are your thoughts guys?

And with accomodation... my parents live in Shepp. So if you struggle let me know, I'll at the very least be doing the Hexman, and parents have offered to put up with triathletes for the weekend, they have a big house up the end of the bike leg, plenty of room.

Break it down like this:

You have an hour to do the swim, most people can do that quite easily

Allow 3.5 hours to do the bike, that's less than 26km /hr on a very flat course

Then if worried about making the 7 hour cut off you have 2.5 hours to do the run, you can basically run 1km, walk 1km at a brisk pace and make it in by that time.  At 7.5 hrs it turns into a brisk walk the whole way.

Either way you will get the experience of knowing what to expect next time, I did my last HIM in 6hrs, 59.57 and I learnt heaps, no regrets out of doing that one.

You still have 24 weeks to get ready, there's a good beginner program on here that is 20 weeks.  During that time your running will improve over what it is today

Word is down to 100 entries left now as well, although there are rumours of another long course race being run next year in Victoria, I've heard of 2 possible courses so hopefully one will come through.

Alright... I decided just to do the Hexman this year.
Bit of an anti-climax really, but I can wait till next year and do it then.

I am still going to help out the Tri Club and be around for the day though. So that should be cool. I am still going to train like I can do it. And then I should smash it next year

Not a bad choice, Jess. You've got to feel good about what you are doing...this is all for fun after all.
Joe- that's my goal. To aim to do just that. Train as good as I can...get to the start and do whatever. If it takes 7 hours, so be it.

Signed up for my first HIM here.

Have not done anything longer than a sprint so it should be interesting to see how I go!

Hey Brendan. Welcome.
I have only done sprints of late too. I did do Noosa but it was back in 2003 and then I had a 5 year break from triathlon. Only been back at it for 2 years and did a couple of enticers and a few sprints. I just thought "What the heck give it a shot and see how I go". We'll have a blast.

Hi,
I've signed up for Shepp too. I just started a new thread a minute ago looking for other people doing it too, then came across this one, which is great! I'll try delete the other thread if that's possible?
It will be my first HIM and I can't wait! I've been building up over the last 2 years and am just aiming to finish.

Looks as though the committee is looking to see if they can expand the field at present, so those who thought of entering but were too slow, get on the waiting list now.

Yep I'm doing the 20 week beginner form here. My training hasn't been non existant but I'm sure this isn't going to be easy! Should be an interesting ride!

How is everyone doing with their training?

I am actually grateful I decided to only enter the sprint, due to a car accident 5 weeks ago... have been unable to train for that long too!!
Got clearance to go back to cycling and swimming this week though, so hopefully I get cleared to run again Friday... Cos that's the biggest thing I need to work on!!!

Sorry to hear about your accident. I hope you are feeling better. It must be really frustrating for you. You still ahve plenty of time so just take it easy and look after your self...we are doing this for fun after all
