carrie639 - 2010-10-07 9:09 PM What do you guys all use for drinks in training and races?  I have been using WAR (Workout Anabolic Recovery) and it is good for muscle recovery, but I am not sure if it is the best for endurance.

I have tried alot of Heed flavors, but what do people think?  What about endurance Gatorade?

I drink Infinit on the bike, but switch to water and cliff shot blocks for fuel on the run.  It's what works for me.  Try several things to find what you like and what works.  Different people tolerate different things.

scotty930 - 2010-10-08 8:44 AM Quick question about IMWI. What hotel did you stay at for it? When I should I have a hotel reserved by to make sure I get one I want? I am thinking of getting that reserved by the end of October the latest. Thanks.

If you want to stay downtown within walking distance of the terrace then you need to book NOW.

I'll end up staying at the la quinta on the east side of town again because I get a 25% discount from the company I work for.  It's about an 8 mile drive to downtown, but goes real fast, especially in the early hours of the morning.  And if you have someone sherpa-ing who can drive you around then it's really not an issue

Yeah, their interview process is very thorough.  The custom blend they helped me come up with worked quite well for me.

I may give infinit a call.  I tried the gatorade endurance (got some same packs from Dicks Sporting Goods) and it taste alright.

I did a long run yesterday, but I think the heat early on did me in.

What do you guys usually do in heat, or take for nutrition for longer runs?  Do you just bring your drinks, or do you also take gels?  Something else?

I also, got a tummy ache, not sure if I was drinking too much, or the gels didn't work well with me.

For my runs I just take gels.  I'm fortunate to have a water stop every 1.5 miles along the trails I run on and in the heat I need to stop every time.  I used to take a sports drink with me on long runs, but it's easier for me to lug 4 or 5 gels along than my fuel belt.

Again, experiment until you find something that works for you, whether that be sports drink, gels, shot bloks, energy bar, cheeseburger.......

Totally agree on the "experiment" idea.  When I first started running and training for marathons, I was a gel person.  Once I started eating healthier, the gels had too much sugar and I probably wasn't drinking enough water with them, so I got cramps.  Stopped taking gels and just drank gatorade off the course.  Since I don't like the new Power Bar drink that will be offered at Ironman Florida, I've changed again.  Now on the run I just do water and cliff shot blocks.  It seems to work for the run.  On the bike, my only nutrition is Infinit.  It works great.  For me.

Survived my HM on Sunday.  Time kinda sucked at 2:27:56.  On the bright side though, my shins were totally pain free (still are, post race!)  The reason for the sucky time?  19,999 other people on the course...it was pretty clear by mile 3 that the shoulder to should crowd was not going to break up anytime soon.  And it didn't.   All 13.1 miles...it was a sea of humanity.  And the walkers!  OMG!  I know they train in their own way for this and they have every right to be out there on the course...but walking three, four, even five abreast?  Really?  And then there were all the participants who would stop dead in their tracks right in front of you (walkers and runners alike) to take photos on their cell phones.  Again, really?  True, the scenery was stunning (especially when you come onto a view of the Golden Gate Bridge at the Presidio).  But this was a race, for goodness sake!

As it turns out, it really wasn't a race.  I had it all wrong.  It was an event.  I experienced a paradigm shift about half way through and decided that just finishing in 2:30 or better would be the objective.  Just go along for the experience and call it done.  I'm glad I did it...but I don't think I will be doing an 'event' with that many participants ever again.

Race report here, in case you're interested:

Been using the gatorade endurance for the runs, so I drag a fuel belt along.  I wish I didn't have to, but I run so slow, when I want want liquids, I need them right then, not in a 1/2 mile or another 2 miles.  Nice thing is I don't have to stop at aid stations then I can run right though.

Plus, other than tossing a cup of water over my head, I can't figure out how to drink out of a cup without having to slow to a walk at aid stations.  I have tried scrunching the cup, but still dump it everywhere. While the weight of the fuel belt might slow me, I get to get ahead of the people that do stop at aid stations . . .

Running hills question:

I ran the Moraine Hills 10K on Saturday, and as it states it was very hilly, most I have ever run.  I did well and ran the whole thing and probably a new PR for me on a 10K distance (so very happy).

Question is what do you guys do on hills?  I find that I will tend to run up them at a quicker pace (maybe in the 10 minute per mile pace or faster), then I get to the top and slow to a 13-14 minute mile pace for about 10-20 seconds to allow my HR to drop back down then go back to my regular pace, 11 minute miles.  I guess I do this because hills to me hurt and my HR raises pretty fast, so to get it over with faster and slowing at the top seems to work, then I go back to my regular 11 minute mile pace.

What do people usually do?  Is it recommended to run the entire course at around the same pace?  Do you just do what works for you?  Am I hurting myself doing it this way because I am doing intervals and draining my strength with speed?

First off, congrats on the PR, especially on a hilly course.

I don't know if there is a "right" way to run hills.  As long as the hill isn't so long (and/or steep) that your HR gets crazy out of control with the effort I don't see real harm in your approach.  Your HR will likely spike anyway even if you just maintain your pace due to the increased effort.  I think as long as it isn't taking you several minutes at the top of the hill to regroup and get that HR under control go for it.

There are a few things I do differently when running up a hill.  I will shorten my stride and raise my knees higher than normal.  I'm not sure why, but this just seems easier to me.  The high knees make it feel like I have more momentum heading up.  I'd like to think that I maintain the same pace, but if it's a long hill I probably slow a bit.  If it's a real short hill sometimes I'll power up it quickly just to get it out of the way.

Checking back with everyone.  Been out for a couple months.  It looked like I was blocked or something for the group because I was getting error messages when I clicked the link.  Sorry but I've been out with a bad back  (most likely herniated disc), and it was just too depressing reading all the race stories when all I was doing was trying to get refunds from the races I signed up for.  I plan to read up on now I can back on the list and see how things went for everyone.

Two big things for me. I was released to start running two weeks ago and it is slow going with short walk/ run.  My back Chyro Dr is an tri guy and he has on a plan to get me back on my IM goal for 2011.  I got a new bike to see if a tri bike setup will help with my back.

I train with a paid group and we do drills to re-enforce our technique.  Mostly striders where we run barefoot focusing on quick turnover and various aspects of our gate.  These are conducted on grass soccer fields to avoid injury.  We do about four to six lengths of the field before we do our shorter technique runs (40 more minutes) doing intervals at different distances depending on the week.  Lots of folks in the team want to run barefooted (Ref. Born to Run book) but our coaches warn about going longer distances on hard surfaces without a long slow buildup to that technique.   I've seen several running plans that have striders included in the plan so they seem to be benefit other too.

Welcome back, Jack!  Sorry to hear about your back situation...I think we can all empathize with how you felt--several of us have suffered injuries this season that either set back our training or sidelined us completely.  In any case, you're back now.  Congrats on being released to run again...and congrats on the new bike.  Take your time ramping up during the off season, and I'm sure your 2011 race season will be great!

Thanks for the encouraging words.  Definitely going to slowly work my way back into running.  I started a new swim class with a local lady teacher that won Ironman Canada a few years ago.  Turns out I have a lot to work on.  So far so good.

Welcome back!  Sorry to hear about the injury   I'm hoping the doc can get you back on track and ready to go for IM next year.  And for the record I think buying a new bike to fight the injured and not racing blues is an excellent idea.  I hope the tri setup does wonders for your back!

Yes, I trained for the run/walk on my long runs.  The 4/1 means I ran for 4 minutes and then walked for 1 minute.  I just repeated that sequence over and over.
