Pre-race routine:

I have no routine. Ate a peanut butter and banana sandwich around 5:15 before leaving hotel at 5:50. Should've left earlier as was my original plan. Got to event about 6:10a and into transition about 6:20ish (it closes at 6:40). I think I will work on this. I don't think I will bring as much stuff next time.
Event warmup:

Because of my poor planning, I did not get any warm-up done. Just some stretching exercises. Standing and jumping in water waiting for start.
Swim
  • 12m 34s
  • 500 meters
  • 02m 31s / 100 meters
Comments:

It has been said not to let your race be your first OWS. I would also say not to let it be your second either. I never felt comfortable in the water. I don't consider my a poor swimmer (slow yes) but those waves kicked my butt! I could not get into a rhythm with freestyle stroke and ended up using breast stroke most of the time.
What would you do differently?:

Um, get more practice in the open water.
Transition 1
  • 03m 16s
Comments:

It was a long run from swim to transition. But, I felt good to be alive and not floating face down in water. Threw down wetsuit, put on socks/shoes and helmet and off I went.
What would you do differently?:

nada
Bike
  • 43m 48s
  • 12.5 miles
  • 17.12 mile/hr
Comments:

I did not get off bike to push it up that Mount Everest size (to me) bridge.
Going up first time felt good, second time had to put it in granny gear. Passed a few and I passed a few. Wheel magnet for computer got out of alignment so I could not get a feel for speed. I tried to keep my cadence in the 70's to 80's. After the turn around it was much easier with the tailwind.
What would you do differently?:

Just got bike first week in March. So, more saddle time. More hills. More practice.
Transition 2
  • 00m 48s
Comments:

I rode the bike with my running shoes on. Took helmet off and put hat on and it was off to the races.
What would you do differently?:

Can't think of anything
Run
  • 24m 4s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 07m 46s  min/mile
Comments:

I felt really good on the run. Who knew the run would be my best event for this race. Got passed by guy who wiped out on bike with bloody arm. Pretty impressed with him.
What would you do differently?:

Can't think of anything.
Post race
Warm down:

Grabbed daughter and got a slice of pizza. Big mistake. Should have down some cool down stretches before grabbing daughter and pizza.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Lack of confidence in water and not enough practice on hills.

Event comments:

Before starting this event my goal time was 1hr 30min. So I am very happy with my performance.

It was cool meeting you out there. I hope we can get together and train sometime.
Outstanding first race! Especially the run; you smoked my time.
