Pre-race routine:

Wanted to to this race primarily for the swim, as the idea of taking a boat out to sea and having to swim back really appealed to me. Not the ideal weekend as New Orleans is this weekend, but I could not resist the swim and I normally do a bit of a brick the weekend before a HIM anyway. So why not?

Drove down to Houston on Saturday, visited with friends and went to the packet pick up.
Event warmup:

Up at 4:30, get things setup in transition, find boat, get on boat.
Swim
  • 00m
  • 1500 meters
  • / 100 meters
Comments:

The swim was great, lots of fun, more races should be like this.

Took the time to enjoy the experience just floating out there waiting for the start watching the sun rise.

The course was a straight line into shore. They had buoys which I had trouble seeing, ended up sighting on one of the buildings close to the swim out.

No idea on the time, should have been around 28 min which is not bad given that I had trouble sighting and swam off course a couple of times.
What would you do differently?:

swim straight
Transition 1
  • 00m
Comments:

Had trouble getting out of wet suit
Bike
  • 1h 18m
  • 24.85 miles
  • 19.12 mile/hr
Comments:

I put a heart rate cap on for the bike and fought the urge to go over it as I watched every one go by me while chanting to my self "don't eat the paste, remember new orleans"
What would you do differently?:

I slipped getting on the bike right out of transition and fell pretty hard with all sorts of nice bruises and cuts (found out that spokes on the tri bike are sharp). Next time, don't slip!
Transition 2
  • 01m 42s
Comments:

Went smooth-ish, put shoes and socks, on grabbed rest of stuff, tried to wash off some of the blood, and ran out
What would you do differently?:

tie my shoes more tightly or put yanks on
Run
  • 46m 51s
  • 6.2 miles
  • 07m 34s  min/mile
Comments:

Pretty happy with the time. Kept the heart rate in check for the first half, allowed it to start going up for the second half.
What would you do differently?:

Tie my shoes better or put yanks in the shoes. That said, I might have made up the time for having to stop to re-tie my shoes (twice) by drafting off the KIA SUV that some how ended up on the course for a bit.
Post race
Warm down:

Visit medical tent, scare wife (wanting to know why I am at the medical tent), grab some pizza, load car, & drive home

Event comments:

I really enjoyed this race. I thought it was well organized and well put together especially for a first time event. I thought that they handled the weather with having to shift around Saturday's activities exceptionally well and that overall the communication was good which more than made up for the couple of minor problems that they might have had (e.g. amount of time to unload the boats)

We drove down to do it because of the swim and were not disappointed.
