I agree with whoever said the nerves go away when my toes hit land again and the swim is over!

I am already having dreams & my 1st Tri is in 3 months!!!!  I get real nervous with any race.  I take cleansing breaths & try to stay positive..great friends supporting you doesn't hurt either!Laughing

That's it for me, too. I know things will go well once I make landfall, but things can go awry on the swim. I like the pre-race nerves, though. It's a natural high.

Doing a long duathlon tomorrow and and I can already feel the butterflies. Love that feeling, I think that if I stop having those butterflies I might as well give up racing. Not that I am FOP but still, I love that feeling of anticipation. Went over some of the course yesterday, and a easy, slow bike later today, and the butterflies just keep on flying....Feels good (or to steal a phrase from a move, I think it was Full Metal Jacket,....Smells like victory

I'm going to go against the grain here, but after my 2nd #2 before a race is when the anxiety starts to fade =)

Why would you want it to go away?

Someone said to me last year before a race: "If you were not excited, what would be the point?"

Enjoy the adrenaline!

The pre race jitters should never go away.  I for one love that anxious feeling of waiting for the gun to go off.

I'm beginning to wonder if it's fun doing anything if you aren't just a little bit anxious before hand.  I was in tears at the start of my last tri, but I did great and the buzz at the finish line was fantastic!

My heart pounds when I visualize sprinting in a bike race. That anticipation/excitation is part of what contributes to a great performance on race day. Too much and it will inhibit your performance, not enough and you'll feel stale.

i dont get nervous before races, i but i do get excited.

i have raced a LOT in the past 10 years ( approx 150 rowing races, 60 multisport and another assorted 30-40 running and tri races), and its second nature at this point.

I love the pre-race feeling, maybe a few butterflies, the excitment, the calm right before the race starts. Its like a giant spring wound up and waiting to be let loose.

thats the fun part and what keeps me coming back.

I rarely get nervous. I am too busy having fun. The only race where I was really nervous beforehand was the 2007 Ironman Newfoundland 70.3, and I had a brutal race.

Reason I was nervous, was I knew I wasn't fully prepared.

Like someone above said, I get nervous just reading this.  With only 1 sprint Tri under my belt I even get excited when my friends race.  Had most of our team up in New Orleans for the HIM this weekend and I had butterflies in my stomach just tracking them.

That is probably the reason I started participating in Tris.  I was running marathons and the excitement wasn't there.  I was no longer feeling the nervousness that I used too so it was time for another challenge.

enjoy the feeling!

I have been getting nervous on the start line since I started running track in 7th grade.  I am not 36 and through the years I have always been nervous toeing the start line.  It what makes it exciting.  It even happened in team sports in junior high and high school, but I would think something was wrong if it one day stopped happening.

Agreed with this. If you arent nervous, you might as well save the entry fee and do a swim/bike/run workout on your own

I bet the pro's still get nerves. It's what gets the adrenaline pumping. Don't hate it...embrace it!!
