Subject: Am I Overtraining?
I'm currently training 6 days each week comprised of: 2 workouts for each discipline, 1 weight lifting session (lasting 1 hour), and 2 core strength workouts (1/2 hour classes at my gym). Is that too much?  I'm wondering if I'm allowing for enough rest, if I'm at high risk for burnout this early in the season, etc.  Any opinions would be appreciated.  Thanks!

I'd say no, not even close. It's pretty hard to overtrain, especially at less than 10 hours/week of training.

It really depends on your current level of fitness I would say. What is minimal training for one person may be waaaay too much volume for another.
Do you feel good for all your workouts?
No excessive fatigue?
Listen very carefully to your body......it knows.

I'm sorry to disagree with you, but it's really easy to overtrain even at 10 hours/week of training.

Professional marathoners can run 140 miles per week.  A couch potato who just started getting in shape could easily overtrain and injury themselves at 10 hour per week.

It all depends on one's base and experience.

Yes it's possible, but not likely. It's easy to ramp up mileage too quickly and get injured. I would also recommend easing into any exercise program, along with proper diet, hydration, and sleep.

Many people use the word "overtraining" too freely. An objective test, such as measuring your resting heart rate each morning, is probably better than "I feel tired".

That's NOT the same as overtraining. Overtraining is considered a state of cumulative fatigue syndrome, where resting HR is elevated, people suffer extreme mood swings, stuff like that. I have never even gotten to the point of overtraining by the accepted definitions. Pro's can on occasion. It's important to define the language in this case.

Since when did getting injured due to too much too soon not be considered overtraining?

As applied to endurance athletes, the common accepted definition of the term I described above. Again, it's a cumulative amount of stress placed on the body without sufficient recovery that results not in simply getting hurt, but almost chronic fatigue. It's semantics somewhat for sure, I'm simply pointing out that jumping off the couch and running a marathon and getting hurt isn't usually consider over training. It's more like a syndrome, if that makes it more clear.

Exactly, it's the point at which exercise is tearing down the muscles more than they are able to recover due to cumulative fatigue, and hence the training is having a negative effect on muscle adaptation and endurance.

Some people use the word interchangeably with "training too much", but in endurance athletes it has a much more specific meaning.

I guess that could be over training in a literal sense.  But over training in this context refers more to muscular fatigue that prevents you from training with any quality at all, as well as to the other symptoms mentioned above.
