Pre-race routine:

Getting up way to early and driving across the island to the start. Barely had time to rack my bike and get my chip before the race briefing started. Thank goodness they had the bike racks numbered so I didn't have to fight for a spot.
Event warmup:

No time, just a quick jog down the beach to the swim start.
Swim
  • 11m 43s
  • 500 meters
  • 02m 20s / 100 meters
Comments:

The RD said from the beginning that he made the course a little longer because of the current. I never noticed no current. Started out ok. Felt pretty good for most of the race. The first bouy was way to close to the start though. There was a serious bottle neck because so many people got there at once. Navigation was off a little, it was hard to tell the yellow turn bouy apart from all the yellow swim caps.
What would you do differently?:

Swim more as usual. I'm just happy I was in the top 1/3 swimming.
Transition 1
  • 01m 20s
Comments:

Not a bad T1, got 4th in my AG. But it didn't feel smooth. Partly do to the new aero helmet I was trying out for the first time. Also tried to rubberband my shoes up, I won't be trying that again anytime soon.
What would you do differently?:

Not use rubberbands and practice with the new helmet.
Bike
  • 30m 12s
  • 12.43 miles
  • 24.70 mile/hr
Comments:

Pretty decent bike overall. I had a little trouble getting into the shoes due to the rubberbands and the speed bumps. I wish I could have attacked the hill a little stronger, but I still passed a bunch of people going up it. Got stuck behind a car going down the hill so I couldn't take full advantage of it. There were quit a few position fouls, which was surprising considering this was a USAT race. One guy decided to cut across lanes as he was cornering in front of me, I had to pass him on the right or we were both going down hard.
What would you do differently?:

Not much, just need more time in the saddle.
Transition 2
  • 00m 57s
Comments:

Had a little trouble with the helmet again. It's just not conducive to a quick transition. Dropped my glasses and decided to leave them. A gust of wind knocked off my visor as I was leaving so I had to go back for it.
Run
  • 24m 12s
  • 3.42 miles
  • 07m 05s  min/mile
Comments:

As soon as I started running I developed a side stitch on my right side. I couldn't seem to shake it so I just gutted it out thru the whole run. I still managed to pick off 3 guys in my age group.
Post race
What limited your ability to perform faster:

The side stich cost me a bit I think.

Event comments:

Overall it was a pretty good race. There were a ton of smiling volunteers and everything ran pretty smooth. I wish they had swept the bike path that we had to run on before the bike mount though. I have a nice bruise on the ball of my foot from a rock or something.

Not a bad start to the season.

I didn't get back in time to register. They were already full. Hopefully I can make it to the K-Bay one.
I know what you mean about the loooonnngggg drive over there. That is the main reason I don't normally do these.

Good luck to you this year!
