Duston,
United Kingdom
Just Racing UK
10C / 50F
Sunny
Total Time = 1h 32m 6s
Overall Rank = 463/527
Age Group = M30-34
Age Group Rank = 57/60
Pre-race routine:

Usual cereal I would have on a training morning, but slightly more as it was 2hrs before race
Event warmup:

Didn't really have time as we set up on arrival, had a race briefing and had to go straight to the pool side.
Swim
  • 09m 20s
  • 400 meters
  • 02m 20s / 100 meters
Comments:

Set a personal best, though it may be due to training in a 33m pool and racing in a 25m one (get to push of the wall 1 extra time per 100m)
What would you do differently?:

Learn to swim front crawl well enough to cover more than 100m! (Swam breast stroke for this event)
Transition 1
  • 03m 24s
Comments:

Took too long drying off and getting socks on
What would you do differently?:

Not bother with socks and use a proper t-shirt so I don't have to towel down so much
Bike
  • 48m 5s
  • 12.43 miles
  • 15.51 mile/hr
Comments:

Couldn't shift down to my lowest gear which put extra strain on my legs on some of the steeper hills. On top of that my right calf cramped half way up the steepest hill (around the 5 mile mark) forcing me to pedal with just my left leg until I could move my right leg again!
However, my time was also a personal best for the distance
What would you do differently?:

make sure I can shift into all gears before the race starts!
Transition 2
  • 01m 9s
Comments:

Cycled with running shoes on (cages on pedals) so just racked the bike, took off helmet and set off
What would you do differently?:

Nothing
Run
  • 30m 6s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 09m 41s  min/mile
Comments:

Started out too fast too early and shins were in pain before the first mile. Stopped to stretch them out a bit and set off again at a slower pace.
What would you do differently?:

Practice bricks more
Post race
What limited your ability to perform faster:

Took too long in T1, used up more energy that I should have not having lowest gear available on hills and set off too quickly on the run

Event comments:

A well organised event for my first race which never left me feeling lost and shown me what I need to work on for the next race

Congratulations, triathlete!

Great job despite the cramps and the transition issues.
