Bumpass, Virginia
United States
Set-up, Inc
66F / 19C
Sunny
Total Time = 3h 02m 2s
Overall Rank = 316/377
Age Group = 40-50
Age Group Rank = 27/33
Pre-race routine:

Woke up at 6AM, left @ 6:30 w/ the boys, 1:30 drive to Lake Anna Marina. Coffee, Apple, Banana, Clif Bar (Oatmeal Raisin) along the way, 20-oz. Infinit to sip on, then Accel Gel 30 min. before race start.

2 hrs. goes by quickly, long registration lines, unloading the car, etc.
Event warmup:

10 min. run, 10 min. bike, 5 min. swim
Swim
  • 41m
  • 1640 yards
  • 02m 30s / 100 yards
Comments:

5-min. warmup was not enough to prepare for the choppy first leg. Didn't feel like I got into any rhythm until the last leg going with the waves.
What would you do differently?:

Other than get some lessons to get more speed, spend at least 10-15 minutes warmup swim (and pray for no wind).
Transition 1
  • 04m
Comments:

(T1 time is estimate due to timing chip problems) Lost my cross pulling off my wetsuit, had to get on my hands and knees and look for it for 2 minutes (was able to estimate my time out of T1 based on seeing Fil). Feet got stuck in wetsuit.
What would you do differently?:

REMOVE the Cross, practice getting the suit off
Bike
  • 1h 16m 29s
  • 24 miles
  • 18.83 mile/hr
Comments:

Pushed hard, but not too hard. Eased up a bit from Sprint pace on second lap to keep HR below 170.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing.
Transition 2
  • 01m 30s
Comments:

Fiddled too much getting the shoes off, could have at least undone them on the bike.

Good grief. Went the wrong way from T2 onto the run course, missed the timing mat.
What would you do differently?:

Learn to dismount bike w/o shoes. Learn which way I'm supposed to enter and exit T2
Run
  • 59m 3s
  • 6.21 miles
  • 09m 31s  min/mile
Comments:

(Running time is estimate) First time I had NO CRAMPS! Stomach was fine (sips of water at each stop, dumped the rest on my head to cool off), no cramps in the legs. Legs totally spent by the end, the last few hills were murder.
What would you do differently?:

Hill Work.
Post race
Warm down:

Walk around, stretch a little, Clif Bar, Hammer's Recoverite Citrus (ugh, try the chocolate next time). Glad I brought some post-race food: all they had was bad pasta.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Swim technique, limited foundation for run.

Event comments:

Another great Setup race, but the organization was off this time: slow registration, timing chip problems (was hoping to establish an accurate baseline for future OLY events), lame food.

Still, I'm psyched I've moved up to OLY Level!
