Veteran 247 Atlanta | Subject: Race day food for sprint I have my very first tri this Saturday and its a sprint. I have to leave my house at 5 am and the race starts at 8 am. Around 4:30 am I will eat a smoothie consisting of hemp protein powder, banana, blueberries, carob powder, water, dates, etc. I will also eat a small serving of plain oatmeal and my normal shot of espresso. My normal bfast is just the smoothie and espresso. We line up at 7:30 at the beach so I will have to eat again between 4:30 and 7:30 and I'm wondering what to eat. I am thinking to eat one Payday bar since I know they work well when I train. And I have will coconut water in my bottle on the bike. Also, thinking of doing another shot of espresso. Opinions? |

Pro 5761 Bartlett, TN | Subject: RE: Race day food for sprint For a Sprint, I do not think you will need anything else to eat. If anything, you might take a gel of some sort before the race or on the bike, but other than that, I would think you'd be fine. |

Extreme Veteran 605 | Subject: RE: Race day food for sprint My pre race would be my normal breakfast, glass of water, mini bagel with peanut butter, and a couple of cups of fruit. I would pass on anything before the race and then I would plan on a gel on the bike when I start the bike and then a second a mile from the bike finish. (But depending how I feel I might only use one of the gels.) I'm not a coffee person, but I wouldn't think it would be good to overdo the coffee as you might get dehydrated. Sensei Sin City | Subject: RE: Race day food for sprint For a sprint, I would probably have a cup of coffee and drink some water to be fully hydrated. MAYBE a granola bar or something. But I would probably go without anything. |

Veteran 247 Atlanta | Subject: RE: Race day food for sprint Thanks. So no Payday bar. No extra coffee. And I'll bring a couple of gels. I prefer the beans...the goo grosses me out. |

Even the last of the BOPers will be done without needing any fuel. I resemble that remark... Seriously, I've never bothered with trying to eat anything during a sprint tri. Never felt I needed to. The bike is usually my strongest leg and I wouldn't want to mess around trying to eat something and losing time doing so. I'll usually carry one drink bottle of Gatorade on the bike, but seldom drink the entire thing unless it's really hot. I'll usually just have some coffee, toast and a banana an hour or so before. Then I pig out at the food tents after the race... Mark |

Extreme Veteran 680 Acworth, GA | Subject: RE: Race day food for sprint See ya at Tanner on the beach. I usually just have a granola bar about 1 hour before, not because of the energy demands, just because that is my routine and stomach will be growling anyway. It takes the edge off for me. |

Thanks...I should have prefaced it with saying I eat every 2 hours so waiting 3 hours until the race started would have made me STARVING! I wasn't thinking of fuel for the race as much as not starting the race super hungry. SEE YOU THERE! |

Expert 618 | Subject: RE: Race day food for sprint I get up, throw my crap in the car and go. I don't eat anything at all in the "breakfast" sense. At 45 minutes to go I'll take a Gu Roctane and another at 15 minutes to go. That's it for me for nutrition until after the race. During the race (in a sprint) if I even touch my water bottle it is amazing. For that short of a time it is simply not needed by me. If you are out there longer than 90 minutes, then perhaps you should drink a bottle. But you physically will not need any food intake unless you starved yourself the night before. |

Champion 5117 Brandon, MS | Subject: RE: Race day food for sprint I just do orange juice, but me and solid foods don't get along very well on race day. For the race it's just water. Early in the season it's just the aero bottle on the bike. Later in the summer I take an extra bottle because racing in 90+ temps with 100% humidity sucks hard. Having said that, your pre-race meals start now. The week leading up to an event is far more important than the day of the race breakfast. Up the carb intake and make sure you're staying hydrated. While a little pre-race nutrition is good, it doesn't matter much if you ignore the week leading up to the event. Edited by sesh 2010-04-21 1:06 PM |

Expert 2852 Pfafftown, NC | Subject: RE: Race day food for sprint Everything I've ever read says....if you're gonna caffeinate, keep caffeinating. I've heard of cyclists drinking flat coke on their rides. Some like it carbonated. I guess you just need to find what works for you, prior to race day. Good luck in your event! |

Extreme Veteran 1030 West Windsor, NJ | Subject: RE: Race day food for sprint Personally..that would be way too much food for me prior to the race (also consider that your stomach may be a little off with the race nerves pouring through your system). I usually have a whole wheat bagel early, like 4:30/5, some water, and a cup of coffee. That's it. Then I just sip water/hydration until the race as needed. And for a Sunday race, I make sure to get a good meal in on Friday night, decent meal in on Saturday night (but not stuffed to the brim), and I am usually fueled up for a sprint race come the morning. I do hydrate with infinit on the bike leg though vs. plain water. I go through maybe half of my aero bottle. Pretty hard to bonk in a sprint and I would go on the side of under-doing it than over-doing it. |

Thanks...never raced before and I'm just tring to work it all out...I'm an oddball in that I eat breakfast 3X a day. REALLY!!! Just small portions... I have increased water intake this week...and also complex carbs. But the advice to underdo it instead of overdo it has been heard! I will stick with the smoothie and not overdo it. I'll eat a little more an hour before the race....I'm not going to eat anything during the race. Food and training has been hard for me to figure out...food and race day is a whole 'nother beast. When I was a kid at swim meets, we'd just bring a box of powdered jello and eat that one fingerfull at a time. |

Extreme Veteran 1030 West Windsor, NJ | Subject: RE: Race day food for sprint Its a personal thing...and it will take a few races to figure out your ideal plan. Hydration is probably the most important thing above all else ( I shoot for pale yellow urine the day before the race...if you are there..you are perfectly hydrated...not overhydrated or under. Then just maintain at that level), so I wouldnt stress about the food/fuel thing too much. Just use common sense and you will be fine. Good luck! |

Expert 1557 Austin, TX | Subject: RE: Race day food for sprint I am the same way about getting hungry before a race. I will take a banana with me and will eat half of it about 30-45min prior to the race. Then a gu right before. |

Veteran 237 Buffalo Grove | Subject: RE: Race day food for sprint Due to the short duration of the race you should just follow your normal routine. If you think that you will get hungry eat something about an hour before the race. Do not eat anything that you have not tried before an exercise on race day. You want to konw how your body will react while under stress. Honestly, for the most part you will not need to take in any additioanl nutrition during the race. Just plan water should do the trick. For your first race, there is more of a mental aspect. If having the gel / beans with your makes you feel more comfortable then by all means do it. Good luck, race hard... hvae fun.... |
