I'm picking up a new bike that comes std. with racing slicks.  Well....I don't do the majority of my riding in races.  So, I think I'll take them off and put something a little more "everyday practical" on.

Is there anything you'd stay away from?

My plan is to buy a race-day set of wheels for next year.  Then, it'll be a non-issue.  For this year, I'll just change the tires back and forth.

Is there any particular reason you don't like the slicks?  I run them all the time on my bike.  If it's a matter of puncture resistance you can put in liners or buy thicker slicks.

Not sure what 'racing slicks' your bike comes with but just about every tire new bikes come with are suitable for everyday riding.  I wouldn't change them.  Only time I ever change my tires is when I put the bike up on the trainer for the winter.  Other than that what I ride what I race.

Well....the guy at my LBS said they'd be kinda dangerous in wet weather.

Hell, I'm cautious anyways....and overly when it's raining.  Just ride 'em?

Thanks!

From Sheldon Brown:

Tread for on-road use

Bicycle tires for on-road use have no need of any sort of tread features; in fact, the best road tires are perfectly smooth, with no tread at all!

Unfortunately, most people assume that a smooth tire will be slippery, so this type of tire is difficult to sell to unsophisticated cyclists. Most tire makers cater to this by putting a very fine pattern on their tires, mainly for cosmetic and marketing reasons. If you examine a section of asphalt or concrete, you'll see that the texture of the road itself is much "knobbier" than the tread features of a good quality road tire. Since the tire is flexible, even a slick tire deforms as it comes into contact with the pavement, acquiring the shape of the pavement texture, only while incontact with the road.

People ask, "But don't slick tires get slippery on wet roads, or worse yet, wet metal features such as expansion joints, paint stripes, or railroad tracks?" The answer is, yes, they do. So do tires with tread. All tires are slippery in these conditions. Tread features make no improvement in this.

I've also found a formula which estimates the hydroplaning speed of a tire to be approximately 9 * SQRT(Tire Pressure), so you're looking at 90+ MPH before it becomes a problem.

Thanks so much.  If I don't need 'em....I won't buy 'em.

Like others said you don't need other tires.

What tires come on the bike? Specs on line usually list tire brands.

Keep the tires that come on the bike for everyday riding.  If you do get another set get a racing set (the ones that come on the bike really aren't a "racing" tire).  You can buy speed with low Crr tires.

Those are decent enough, inexpensive, tires. Keep 'em and wear 'em until they're flat in the center. Then get another pair and wear them out too. When you've worn out your first set you may want to consider gatorskins or armadillos if you get flats a lot in your area.

As above, you don't really need tread. Don't sweat it.

Bontrager Hard Case tires. Kevlar lining. Haven't had a flat since getting them a year ago. About $40. Get the ones with the wire bead. Holds inflation great.

Sooooo heavy.  These may be good for training, as are the gatorskins and armadillos.  I'll keep racing on my PR3's or GP4000s's.

Good, solid, durable everyday tire.  I've put over 5k mi on one rear ZP before I replaced 'cause the casing (threads) started showing.

And as was said, tread makes NO difference to wet weather handling on a bike tire.

I have these as the towns I live in and around only bust out the street sweepers during elections.

They are nice and durable but a real PITA to change. For any "race" longer than an OLY I would recommend lighter racing kicks, but these are awesome for any other time for sure...

My "everything" tires presently are the Rubino Pro Slicks.  No problems whatsoever and I would say I presently subscribe to what was quoted from Sheldon Brown above.

my bike came stock with maxxis fuse tires, that lasted  a full year, trainer and road. I dont worry about weight for training - exercise. Never a flat even when run with low pressure.
