Tupper Lake Tinman - TriathlonSprint

View Member's Race Log
Tupper Lake, NY
United States
90F / 32C
Sunny
Total Time = 4h 22m 29s
Overall Rank = 84/88
Age Group = M40-59
Age Group Rank = 11/12
Pre-race routine:

Had bagels and coffee, prepped, then went to the event.
I was a little unsure of the flow of getting marked, chipped etc so was somewhat inefficient getting to starting line right before official start.
Event warmup:

I didn't have much time, just a little stretching before going, and dunked myself to get used to the water temp.
Swim
  • 41m 5s
  • 800 meters
  • 05m 08s / 100 meters
Comments:

Made sure I was at the back so I wouldn't slow others down.
Forgot to put goggles on before start, had to tread water to put them on!
The wind was making whitecaps which made breathing and sighting harder, this threw me off.
I was sighting so bad, I'm sure I took at least 1100M in the 800M swim.
What would you do differently?:

Train more, lose weight, get more OW practice
Transition 1
  • 05m 9s
Comments:

I was just there to finish, and the swim took way more out of me than I expected. Just got everything read, a shot of cold gatoraid with extra electrolytes and went.
Everyone pretty much had to wait for traffic breaks to exit.
What would you do differently?:

Not much, once I'm in good enough shape to do everything better I'll worry about 2-3 mins in transitions.
Bike
  • 1h 47m 42s
  • 26 miles
  • 14.48 mile/hr
Comments:

Far more hilly that I expected or ever trained on, and was so tired after the swim that I had little energy for climbing. I did a lot of walking bike up hills while resting to pedal down.
The only good thing about being heavy is that rolling downhill, you have a higher mass/resistance ratio.
Started getting leg crams 2/3 of the way back.
I hit 45 MPH down the big hill on my mountain bike!
Side note: the sprint course turned out to only be 20 miles not 26, when I got to the aid station at mount arab, and they said turn around here I looked at the pavement and it was marked, so I did it. (at that point I really didn't mind skipping 3 more miles uphill before turn around)
What would you do differently?:

Lose a lot of weight, train enough that I've got good bricks under belt before race.
Transition 2
  • 02m 24s
Comments:

After exiting to run course I wasn't sure where to go, they hadn't put up signs since they must have thought it was obvious, the bystanders didn't know either.
Volunteers and officials were pretty much absent because I was in break between sprint wave and first 1/2 wave getting back
Run
  • 00m
  • 10 kms
  •  min/km
Comments:

Tried running several times, but each time legs would cramp instantly, so I decided it was a good day for a walk, and just walked the whole course at the fastest pace I could.
What would you do differently?:

Lose weight, train more, do bricks.
Post race
What limited your ability to perform faster:

*Weight*, not enough training with bricks, and leg cramps(related to the first two I'm sure).

Event comments:

My buddies set me up! I had no idea this sprint race was so long and had so many hills.
I really enjoyed it though, I'd rather do poorly, finish and know where I am than not have done it at all.

I may be wrong, but I'm pretty sure your buddies really set you up! The swim was probably closer to 2000 meters...I think it's 1.2 miles isn't it?

Really good job on this race.

Yeah, your buddies set you up.  Doing your first triathlon with a 10k run at the end is no joke.  That's an olympic distance run leg.  In fact, if they doubled the swim and added 6 more miles to the bike you'd have an Olympic.  So, pat yourself on the back, cause this sure was longer than a regular sprint distance (usually around 1/2 Oly, 4-600 yrd swim, 10-15 mile bike, 5k run)

This course is also super hilly and tough from what I've heard.

You rock!
