remy6277 - 2010-05-05 6:54 AM I did it on my road bike (cannondale CAAD 9 5) got up to 40mph down some of the hills. A cople of people in the group had tri bikes and were ahead of the pack. Not sure if it was because of the bikes or because they were in just better shape. : ) As far as the % grade change, my watch showed and average of 8-10% grade change with a couple of %20 changes. I'm not really sure how correct this is. Bascially be perpared to ride up and down hills non stop.

I don't think the grades are quite that steep.  I would recommend checking out the course on Map My Ride.  It gives grades for the elevation of the course.

Crazy.  And then run 4 miles after all the hills on the bike.  Can't wait.  Surprised

You mean run four miles OF hills after all those hills on the bike....the Run course isn't exactly flat

Yep.  over 100 feet gain per mile of run.

remy6277 - 2010-05-04 9:25 AM Completed the bike course twice this weekend and I must say it was my hardest bike ride ever! Galena will be my very first tri, so I wanted to see what these hills were all about before the race. Loaded up my Garmin data when I got home and the route looked like a sine wave...one hill after the next. The mile long climb was pretty terrible! Ended up riding about 45 mile through those hills...we got lost a couple of times. : ) All in all it was a beautiful and challenging course. I think I will do just fine in my first tri...provided I survive the swim. lol

Remy6277-

I also did the ride with you last Sat.  I have the white Trek Tri bike and was wearing the red 2XU outfit.  Living in Galena I'm very use to the hills.  It's funny to hear you say it was the hardest ride ever.  The race course is actually easier that my normal training route.
If I remember correctly you and your friend were also talking about doing the swim after the ride.  Did you swim?

Nate, I remember you. I saw you at the start and you were already putting your bike away when I reached the end. LOL Did you beat the lady on the Scott bike? There aren't any hills like that where I live. 45 miles that day was a big accomplishment for me. I loved the area though, I'm definitely making a few trips a year to the area.
We did not swim! Water was a little too cold for me. : )

I did beat that lady on the Scott bike, but only by a couple of mins.  I ran that big hill after the bike and I was very surprised to see her pull in the parking lot as I was getting my running shoes on.  Needless to say I was very impressed.  You had a good bike time as well and it's always good to ride the course in advance.  If it's not to cold tomorrow I'm going to do it again.

I don't mean to hijack this thread so.. when I'm done, you can go back to discussing the Galena Tri;It sems as though there is a good sized group of you that live close enough to either train there or easily make the trip there for the race. I'm just making a shameless ad for the race we are putting on in Rockford in August. It's a full Oly and the run portion will have some rolling hills. What I remember about the Galena area is that this area provides a new definition (at least for the midwest) of hills. Our run course probably won't be that severe but... the first three miles will be non stop rolling hills. Our website is www.rockfordtriathlon.com Sorry; Back to the Galena Tri discussion now

It can't get much worse.  I rode today in the NW burbs and it was terrible.  Wind and rain.  No fun!

Looking forward to the big day...

Well, the forecast continues to look good for that day.  Too bad it won't warm the water up any faster.

Guess I'll just have to set a swim PR to get out of it as quickly as possible.

I do Poptarts for Breakfest. I might take in 100-150 calories on the bike. Water during the run portions of the race.

I thought I would throw this out there in case anyone is still looking for a place to stay for the tri this weekend....

I registered for the race but now unfortunately cannot do it.  Tried to cancel my B&B reservation this morning and was told I am on the hook for the room unless they can get another reservation to take my place.  They opened up the registration on their website if anyone is interested, looks really nice and I'm sorry I can't go....

www.farmersguesthouse.com  if you click on make a reservation at the top, and pick May 21, it is the Samantha Room, $139.50 a night.

Good luck to everyone doing the race, weather looks like it will be awesome!

Hell, I can do 58.  I think last year it was only 60 and that was nothing.

Hope to see you all out there.

The water might have been 60 but it was in the high 40's air temp

I'll be in my Endurance Nation Team Kit.

THAT is for certain.  Looks like it will be a flip flop this year, thankfully.

I'll probably have a grey Sugoi top on.
