I don't get it.

Yesterday my little town had its annual sprint triathlon and I was walking by the transition area this morning and it was an absolute mess.  Water bottles, trash, plastic bags all over the place.  I thought triathletes cared more about the their surroundings and environment.  I rarely post (in fact not for years before this week), but I can't believe the disrespect for a well run race and friendly small town.

Not so much against the racers, as you were looking at a water station area (it's kind of expected to drink then toss), but the onus was on the race organization to clean up after itself...

What I wanna know is......WHO picks up all the spent gel packs along the course route?  I'm being serious.

We had a mini-sprint this Saturday, and I only found one water bottle and one gel pack.  I think the water bottle was from the spectators, and the gel pack was an athlete, but it was better than I expected.

I clean up my area no matter what it is from.  I also try to instill that same work ethic to my daughters.  Some people just really don't know any better, because they have never had to pick up after themselves.

The racers.  Well, racers are supposed to hang on to the used packs until they come to a water station and throw them in the trash cans.
That's what I do.

Post-celebration at the Toy Bar?

Gotta love a town that has turkey bowling.

It wasn't a water station area.  It was T1/T2.  They had to come back and get their bike they could have pick up their trash while they were there.

I think it's in the USAT rule book that you are not allowed to throw anything that YOU BROUGHT with you onto the course.  So it's okay to take a cup of water from an aid station and throw it on the course (if you miss the trash can)...but it's not okay for you to bring a gel pack from home...then throw it onto the course.

I haven't done a race that has given out gel packs on the course...but I guess it wouldn't be against the rules to toss it on the course if they provide it...but the common courtesy is to stash it in your pockets and throw it in the rubbish can regardless.  Pockets in tri shorts/jerseys were not made to carry empty cups...but they were ment to carry empty gel packs.

ETA: I would like to know what people do with their empty gel packs when there is no trash can available while they train?  Do they just throw it on the road?  If you're willing to stash it in your pocket while you train, you should also do it while you race.

Who actually uses gels in sprint races on the course?  I can see using one beforehand, but during the race is a bit late.

DOH! Had a brain fart of reading comprehension there... Yeah, it should be cleaned up, and yes, every one should clean up after themselves.
