Total Time = 1h 40m 23s
Overall Rank = /
Age Group = 45-49
Age Group Rank = 42/47
Pre-race routine:

Visualization, deep breathing.
Event warmup:

Some stretching.
Swim
  • 00m
  • 547 yards
  • / 100 yards
Transition 1
  • 00m
Comments:

No T1 as swim was cancelled.
Bike
  • 52m 9s
  • 12 miles
  • 13.81 mile/hr
Comments:

Pushed a little too hard on the bike - winds were strong and I was determined to average 15mph, which I did not.
What would you do differently?:

Given that there was such a strong wind, I would have saved my legs a little more for the run.
Transition 2
  • 03m 45s
Comments:

What the heck was I doing for 3:45 in T2?!? I went as fast as I could! I didn't even tape my left foot for the run.
What would you do differently?:

I'm going to have to think about this. I gu'd and hydrated before T2, so I'm at a loss. Maybe I didn't run fast enough to the run start?
Run
  • 44m 30s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 14m 19s  min/mile
Comments:

I think my sucky run time reflects my lack of aerobic base in running, as well as my weight issues. This is the sport that I will have to work the hardest on improving, and I doubt that I can improve very much until I drop a significant amount of weight. Time for Weight Watchers....
What would you do differently?:

Can't really say - I had trained as instructed by the BT training programs. I think that my number one priority is losing weight. Next is hire a running coach and start doing some drills.
Post race
Warm down:

Stretched, walked around venue to loosen legs.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Weight. Inexperience. Poor aerobic base/conditioning.

Event comments:

I may consider doing this race again - especially since the swim was cancelled. I wanted to swim in the ocean badly.

HR maxed-out at beginning of run. Slowed to a walk for 2-3 minutes after about 10 minutes of running - this helped with HR a LOT. Had to repeat the walk two more times, but for shorter periods each time. With one mile left my HR FINALLY settled-down and I was able to run faster.

oops!  Tony was logged in.  :-)

I'm so sorry about the swim but it looked pretty rough that morning.  It was nice to meet you.  Good luck in your next race!

Nice race Trina - keep at it is all I can say, running is not my fave either and I definitely hear you on the weight, I know that my size slows me way down!  Perhaps we should yell at each other to go run when we see the logs missing run workouts

Good job despite missing the swim!!

If you continue this 3 years from now, you'll laugh at this RR. It gets easier...I think! :-)
A friend told me this, "It doesn't matter if you're the slowest on the swim, bike or the run, you're faster than someone on the couch".

Keep it up!!!

Good report Trina,  Good effort.

Your "race analysis" is well thought out.  Now that you have a race behind you, it's up from here!!!

CongratulationsCool

Bummer about the swim getting cancelled!  And it sounds like it was a rough/windy day on the bike too.  Nice work out there, now you have a target to beat next race. Smile

Great job!

Swim was rough for us next day and it looked flat. I think the swim would have been tough for many given the waves. on Saturday.  It is hard when things get changed especially on your first tri and there was a lot of waiting and wondering what was going on and not exactly clear when it went to a du how that would go.

Congrats...signing up and toeing the line for your first tri take real determination and will power and finishing!

Like someone else said look back in a few years and you will be amazed how much you have changed.

I have come in last and 3rd to last in my first year of tri'ing and I enjoy the journey of getting to where I am today.

Trina,

Congrats on your first race.  Be patient with yourself and each sport.  It takes time to build.  Getting a "tri" coach and not just a run coach will help immensely over time but I'd wait till next year and get some experience under your belt first.

You did AWESOME!  Congrats again.

Thanks everyone. I am certainly hoping that in a few years I will look back on this RR and chuckle. I am the slowest runner in the world!!!! (spoken like Leo DiCaprio standing on front of the Titanic).

I do have to say that it did take a lot of determination to get out there and do this race. Battling old demons in my head - self doubt, self criticism, perfectionism, and still comparing myself to others racing. I now understand what people mean when they say that the mental part of the race is as if not more important than the physical.

Andy - Please do yell at me when I don't run! Tongue out

Trina,

Just read your report and I thought it sounded similar to some of my reports during my first tri season.  Try not to be frustrated.  You've accomplished something you set out to do and you have greater accomplishments yet to come.  You've just entered the water ... you're still a long way from running across the last finish line.

For those of us who were athletic in our younger days but have waited until our 40's to enter this sport, I think the biggest thing for us to recognize is that our bodies respond and adjust differently than they did 20-30 years ago.  I still catch myself thinking I'm 25 and can do anything, but the truth is I'm 45 and can do anything.  The doing is still there, the process to get there is different 20 years later.

Plus, how many people at our next high school reunion will be able to call themselves triathletes?  What do you think ... IM tats on our calves before the next one?  :-)

Brian -

If and when I complete an Ironman (or even a HIM) I will take you up on those tats Wink And we will sooooo show them off at our HS reunion.
