Overall Rank = 1235/
Age Group = 50-54
Age Group Rank = 0/
Pre-race routine:

Oatmeal and a banana at 4:00 am. lots of water.
Event warmup:

Walking from transition to swim start - approx 8 minutes.
Swim
  • 49m 52s
  • 1931 meters
  • 02m 35s / 100 meters
Comments:

Did a decent job of staying straight most of the time. Stayed out of traffic for the most part. Deliberate, consistent pace I thought. Finish time was much better than I expected. As always, a slight bit off-balance at exit. could be a water-in-the-ear issue. Breathing was almost exclusively right side because of waves, but it worked well. Suit peelers were great.
Lara bar walking to the swim. Gel about 30 minutes before wave.
What would you do differently?:

For this distance it worked out pretty well. If I tried to swim faster I usually got caught up in traffic, so I think my pace was about right.
Transition 1
  • 05m 40s
Comments:

Took my time getting up to T-1 so my equilibrium would steady. wasn't in any hurry. Made sure I had skullcap on.
What would you do differently?:

Could probably shave a couple minutes by getting my butt in gear.
Need to put tube of chamois butter in shoe so I remember to use it.
Need to use spray-on sunscreen after swim. Sunburn sucks.
Bike
  • 3h 14m 14s
  • 56 miles
  • 17.30 mile/hr
Comments:

Since I forgot to put my computer on the bike, I had no idea about my speed or cadence, so I just tried to keep the pedaling consistent. Managed to pass a few people, watched a lot of the women blow past me. Tried to keep it consistent so I would still have something in the tank at the turnaround, but the expected tailwinds were not there, so pretty much just focused on the consistent cadence.
Gels pretty regularly every 30 minutes. Watered down Gatorade in bottles.
What would you do differently?:

Make sure the computer is on the bike.
Transition 2
  • 04m 37s
Comments:

Really just made sure I stayed out of the way for those trying for a time. walked the bike back after taking the shoes off. Had unstrapped and come out of left shoe.
What would you do differently?:

Could have come out of both shoes while on the bike. If going for speed, wold have trotted bike back.
Run
  • 3h 14m 53s
  • 13.1 miles
  • 14m 53s  min/mile
Comments:

Walked a lot, which is what the plan was anyway. Stopped twice to adjust right shoe. Walked through aid stations, diluted Gatorade with water. Tried the warm soda once, not good.
What would you do differently?:

Don't drink the warm soda.
Better learn to run.
Post race
Warm down:

Walking. Drink two bottles water, two cokes and 1 1/2 slices pizza.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

I don't run.
No computer on the bike.

Event comments:

Actually was registered for the sprint saturday, but great opportunity for me, since they cancelled the sprint swim. I didn't do any of the Sprint, just turned in my chip. Kind of a last minute decision to do this, but felt like at least prepared on the swim and bike. Worked out well for me.

When you shared you were considering doing the 70.3 instead of the sprint, I was thinking wow..first tri 70.3 and without training for it specifically.

Smart execution on your part...glad you had a fun first tri.

Congrats on a great first tri!

Now train for the triple bypass and show those 4 passes who's boss!

See you in FL
