There's no shame in being last...the last finishers usually get the most applause.  Embrace it.  I know of several people afraid of being last and then when they raced and they found out they beat somebody (usually several people).  I see 5k's etc, not as events where I race "other" people, but rather events where I race myself and see if I can beat a certain time I set for myself.

You'll do fine.  Go for it!

I had a fear too of being last, I still have a bit of fear for that but then I remember all the IMC's I've been to and how the last place finisher was cheered the absolute loudest from the moment they entered Penticton all the way to the finish line, last place is nothing to balk at - heck - it's a party!!!  For some reason, the last place person is the one that we all admire the most, can relate to the most and are the most emotional about - seriously, when looking around at IMC as the last person came into the chute there were so many people with tears in their eyes and even though we didn't know the person crossing that finish line we were so proud of them.

With that being said, as previous posters have stated, it sounds like you won't be last, but think of this 5k like you are a "Participant" NOT a "Competitor", that puts the 5k into the Run category not the Race category.  This is for fun, you're not going to quit your day job and be some elite athelete, that's not why you're doing this, run with the goal of finishing and that might help take the pressure off a bit.  Well good luck, you'll do great, and you'll finish!

Does it really matter if you get last?  DFL > DNS anyways.

1). Don't worry.
2). Have fun.
3). Get the confidence.
4). Train more.
5). HTFU.
6). You'll be fine.
7). Be proud of getting out there and doing the races!

Anyone watch biggest loser?  They did a 5K race last night, and the last person finished in something like TWO HOURS.  And the crowd went wild.  That's not a typical finish time, but it is a typical reaction.

I think the prospects of letting your health slip away is FAR SCARIER than finishing last.

At a 15:00 pace, it's very unlikely you will be last.  And even if you did have to slow down to a 20:00 pace and did come in last...there will still be tons of people there to cheer you on.  That can be a life changing experience...to see a bunch of total strangers supporting your journey to a better life.

ETA:  You may also want to look into some 5 or 10k walks.  They aren't official races with timing...but I know the Cancer Society, MS, and Diabetes organizations hold 5k walks in my town...where 50% of the people simply walk...like a 20-25 min mile pace...and the other 50% are jogging or running.  I did the Diabetes 5k walk about 5 years ago...I decided to run it...and was the first one to finish...HAH...it took me like 26 minutes.

mmrocker13 - 2010-04-28 10:26 AM DFL is better than DNS :-)

And who cares if you ARE last? Someone has to be last. And first. And all points in between. Don't feel self conscious--everyone out there is worried about their own race, not what Jane Doe or Joe Baggadonuts standing next to them is doing. And no one will stone you or mock you. Go. Get out there. Don't let the "what ifs" rule your life.

Great advice. I'm a what--iffer.

What if you stopped doing that?

Pick a huge race like Race for the Cure. Or find one that is a run/walk.

Seriously, don't worry about being last. No one cares. Let me say it again: No.One.Cares.

If you're coming in last just think about all the people who are in BED right now or who are watching TV or doing something else lazy. I'd rather be last in a race ANY day than be unhealthy and wasting my time.

But you won't be last.

Congratulations on starting down the path that most haven't and won't ever begin.  Now be sure to get to the start line, and then get to the finish line. You're already a winner - that won't be decided by your time or finish position.

There are always fears whenever we decide to part take in something difficult. This one being a race and finishing last. For some it might be entering a Triathlon and getting eaten by a shark, or falling off the bike at the mount line, or not finishing or not beating the cutoff...maybe not achieving your goal time...etc etc.

THIS IS WHY WE DO IT. You have to understand that these are not the reasons we don't compete, they are the essence of it. Overcoming, achieving, adapting, worrying, pressure, accomplishments and let downs are all in the same category...human emotions. These are the emotions that let us know we are alive...these are the emotions, good and bad, that propel us to compete, on whatever level that might be.

You might finish last, someone might mock you, you might feel bad, they might pack up the finish line and leave you...OR, you might not finish last, you might beat 15 mpm, you might get a ton of cheers, you might strive to do better next time...

BUT, the bottom line is, if you don't do it, you'll never know. You'll never give yourself a chance at the experience....whatever that might be. Take the chance...life is short. No matter what happens, you will be the better for it.

Wow...you guys have REALLY changed my outlook on this!  That's why I love this group so much...all of you really put it into perspective.  I probably won't be last and after reading all of your messages, I realize that I don't really care.  Starting up all of these crazy fitness things have put me on a brand new path in life that I am actually excited to be on.  I really am doing this for fun, because I want to, because I want to be healthy and meet other like minded people and because I want to accomplish something that is a challenge to me...and because I put this stuff of for so long because someone else didn't want me to...it's definitely me time.

So, check it out...I signed up for a 5K, a 10K (the Bolder Boulder), a sprint tri and the Warrior Dash....that's my summer...I can't wait for it!  Thanks for your support, my virtual triathlete friends!

^^ excellent !

also I might add, there's no coach, boss, organization, or sponsor hanging over you to perform...so it's all in your head. that's what is great about AG participation, you do it on your own terms.

Just go for it.  When I have friends who have these fears I tell them that finishing anything really is an accomplishment and I mean it.  So what if you finish last at least you are doing a 5k, what percentage of the people around the world are doing this.  It should all be about you and the accomplishment soon you will get better and you will also loose some weight.  So carry on and who cares if you are last!  Keep up the good work!

x2 for all the other posts.

The only thing I can add is to view this 5k as a benchmark. Whatever time you end up running this race in will be your new time to beat. No pressure, just enjoy the experience, see where your at, and use the experience to plan your future training & set goals.
