Event warmup:

Jogged for 5 minutes, a few short strides, then went to One World Market to watch my friend eat sushi for like 5-10 minutes. Then we headed to the race start. I tried to slow jog as she walked but I'm really not sure how much it helped. Arrived at start, potty break one last time, shortly thereafter, race started!

Comments:

I went in with a realistic goal of sub-23 (7:24 pace), and a reach goal of sub-22 (7:05). I really had no clue whether or not a sub-22 was realistic/possible. I also really had no clue how to pace, so I just decided to go as my legs felt. This resulted in a first mile of 6:18!! I seriously thought the mile marker was off, I was not expecting that at all! Anyway, after that, naturally I started to fade. Mile 2 came in at 7:24. From there it just got progressively worse... particularly mentally. I just really suck at the mental game. I was having all sorts of negative thoughts, including stopping to walk, quitting, and also the thought of "I hate running," ha! Well, I just kept going, mile 3 at 7:33. Towards the (very) tail end I was able to pick it up towards the finish... and well, it turns out I was oh so very close to my goal of sub-22!! Had I known that, I definitely could have pushed through for that extra second off my time.
What would you do differently?:

Pay closer attention to my overall time!!! Very disappointing that I missed my reach goal by 1 second! Also, toughen up mentally.

Warm down:

Walked around.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Lack of mental toughness.

Course: Well this is Michigan... had to watch for cracks in the road at times. What I would call rolling hills... but most would call relatively flat. :)
