Pre-race routine:

this pre-race routine dates back a year or so. someone in our mentor group, swbkrun, mentioned this race and some how i suckered a few of them into coming down and racing it, by way of a few beers of course.

met a bunch of BT peeps at 288 for a swim on friday.
Event warmup:

probably over did it here. the better half was supposed to race her fist tri at the sprint on saturday. unfortunately the swim got blown out. so we watched suzy and her take off on the bike and walked over to chow.

got back over to the finish to see jarrett come in. awesome. she was a bit disappointed that the swim was canceled but was already chiming in about the next race. so much for one and done... what about MY training time!

hung out around the big white tent, talked to my dad and went for a swim.

Swim
  • 44m 47s
  • 2112 yards
  • 02m 07s / 100 yards
Comments:

the course map showed outside right to be the shortest line to the first turn. so i had planned on this, right up until the start. walking up palm beach it was clear with the westerly wind that left side was the place to be. the wind was pushing the intermediate buoys to the east and watching the first few waves go off, the athletes as well.

so i went about 5 feet outside the left buoy. several others noted the same thing and joined me over there. a few commented on how more people didn't pick up on this. oh well.

away we went. pretty uneventful swim. the long westerly stretch was slow going with a bit of chop and wind. i also did a poor job of siting here as i nailed the first turn but about halfway down the stretch i realized i was a good 20 yards north of the line.

i swam a 34 minute 1500 at gateway 2 weeks ago so i was expecting to be a bit faster than this. oh well. good swim.
Transition 1
  • 03m 12s
Comments:

slow transition! transition is simple. get out as fast as you can.
What would you do differently?:

run
Bike
  • 3h 23m
  • 56 miles
  • 16.55 mile/hr
Comments:

goal was to hang around 130 on the hr monitor. worked out well. felt really good the first half. second was good to but the course got really boring.

i did manage to take a leak or three! never have i done that before. sounds stupid but i tried to go and and i went. was smart enough to check behind me first. but then when you're this slow there's not to many people left behind you! ha!

What would you do differently?:

push harder
Transition 2
  • 01m 39s
Comments:

pretty good transition. could be faster but it is what it is.
Run
  • 2h 38m
  • 13.1 miles
  • 12m 04s  min/mile
Comments:

well. here we are. the. run.

really happy to see trevor, tony and sam out there. awesome stuff running trevor to the chute. ran with tony for a little bit but he had a lot more gas so i told him to go. sam, i watched he run by and was amazed at how fresh she looked! i kept looking for suzy but she never showed up. hopefully she'll keep working on her run and get faster.

What would you do differently?:

not so sure what went down. seems to be the same issues that were at gateway. but who knows.
Post race

Well, I don't know what you're complaining about. You did great. But then again I'm a noob so I really don't know what I'm talking about.

Nevertheless, I'm impressed.

Sounds like you learned quite a few things...where to line up for swim start, how to pee on your bike, HIMs are hard, plus your mentor group rocks!

congrats!

Thanks for putting the 288 swim together and being kind to us MA folks.

I enjoyed the venue and hope to come back.

Nice race John....it was awesome of you and Jarrett to host SWBKRUN.  Perhaps the reason you didn't see me was because I finished before you got off the bike???????????

PS.  I found this dollar in my pocket when I got home...I guess you'll believe me from now on when I tell you I am going to stick to my plan!
