Subject: Oh man, am I in trouble!
I have a sprint Tri and a duathlon on the same weekend in two weeks.  I just did my first true brick today, 8 miles in hills at 20mph (good for me), a 90 second transition, then 2 miles running at tempo pace.  I had no hrm but HR felt very high at end of bike and all of the run.  Breathing was out of control in transition and first part of the run.  I composed myself and finished the run in a near sprint.  It took me a solid 10 minutes after the run to calm down, normally I'm good after a short walk and stretch.

I'm pretty disappointed with the workout.  I can ride hard for 25 miles and run for 8+ miles but apparently not together.  A couple of no-nos I did, I did a chest/back strength workout this morning and I attacked a hill 30 seconds before getting off the bike.  Oh well, I'm commited to both races at this point.  I guess I'll do a couple of bricks before race weekend and hope for the best.  Words of encouragement are appreciated.Frown

Why are you doing a du and a tri in the same weekend?

In any case, I'd just consider the workout as a lesson learned in terms of pacing.  Use your last two weeks of workouts to dial in a better target pace for your race(s).

Ahaha, I have totally been there. One year, I did a sprint tri on Saturday (and my heat started in the afternoon so I wasn't done until like 3:00), then we packed up and drove 8 hours immediately when I was done and did a du the next AM (10k-40k-5k). Good times. I didn't want to do the du after the sprint, but it's funny how the body will get things done when in the race mentality. Wasn't my best race for the du, because I had done really well for myself the day before, but it was okay.

Maybe do some more bricks this week, but maybe not at full speed - the purpose of them is to get your legs used to running after being on the bike (at least for me). I think you'll be fine, but make sure you take a few days to rest up prior to your races. And try not to stress yourself out about your pace/HR as that will just make you more nervous for your races and stress is bad in general. Maybe you can pick which race you want to do your best at, and then do the other one for fun/training. That might take some of the pressure off.    Don't worry, you'll do fine!

I have no idea...all this didn't seem so hard when I signed up for the du last week.

I'm not trying to kill either race...I'll just hang in there for the sprint and do my best the next day at the du.  I definitely respect you guys that race triathlons of any distance.

I'm not a big fan of bricks for any purpose other than preparing yourself mentally for the feeling of running immediately after biking or because time constraints don't allow for separate training sessions that day.  If your purpose is the mental aspect, you can accomplish the same thing by doing a transition run of about 10 minutes after a quick transition from the bike.  The benefit of this over a brick is that it supposedly reduces your risk of injury.

The answer probably isn't more bricks.  It's probably pacing better for the two combined.  Also, it can help if you back off on your effort level on the last mile or so on the bike for a short active recovery period to help you find your running legs quicker.

I about dies on my first brick too.  Heart rate through the roof, legs forgot how to run.  Try increasing your cadence in the last half mile or so of the bike.  I also stand and stretch my back a couple times in that last half mile.  It still isn't easy.

I would just say go slow and easy. You are there to have fun and not put your HR in the red zone and ruin your day. No extra credit for grinding the big gears on the ride either.
It does take time getting use to running after biking.
My coach has me running almost every time I get off the bike. It may just be a 10-20 minute easy run, but I find this works for me.

Good advice.  I think I won't do any more 'formal' bricks but I'll run an easy mile after every bike ride.  The more I think about it, attacking that hill before jumping off the bike is probably what did me in.  I won't see a hill like that in either race.
