Hi all.  I'm located in central/southern Illinos (i.e. nowhere near Chicago).  Over the weekend I had a crazy idea that I want to do a triathlon.  Problem is, the one in town is 2 weeks away.  I figure I'm young enough (23) and in good enough shape that I will be alright, but slow for sure.  I can steadily run 5 miles, can swim easily though I've never tried swimming competitively, and I'm not overly worried about the bike, except that I have only a mountain bike and will be borrowing a hybrid for the race.  Am I crazy to try to do this in two weeks?  There is another one in town in August so I figure I can progress over the summer (hopefully) and get faster.  Glad to be part of this community!

The race is May 16th.  I'm confident that I can do it, but just nervous that I'll be the only one not in it for the competition.  Hopefully it will be a good experience, I've found lots more in the area that would be fun to do too.

A shout-out from another first-timer who is not in it for the competition - my tri is this weekend. Good luck and have fun! I am sure there will be others there in the same boat.

Where is the tri?  I'll be doing my first ever tri May 16th in Effingham.  I'm a wimp when it comes to cold water so I'll be wearing a wetsuit.  Something you might want to consider.

If it is the effingham one, I did that last year as my first tri and it was great.  I would say 75% of the participants are "real" triathletes and the others are newbies, as I was last year.  It is nice and small so it will be great for your first one.  I am doing the august one there, do that one too!

Are you planning on doing any more tri's this summer, if so where you thinking.  I know there is a good one in bloomington il, the tri sharks hold it.  Check it out.

Good luck!

I'm out of town for the tri shark one but I heard it is great.  My plan so far is Carlyle IL the next weekend then Innsbrooke MO Sprint 6/26.  After that I'm thinking Springfield IL Oly 7/25 Mattoon IL Oly 9/4.

I'm open to other ones if you know of some good ones.

I will be doing the one in Effingham.  It's where I live so I figured "why not".  My dad has a couple of wetsuits from kayaking excursions so I plan to borrow one of his.  I'm also borrowing a bike since I'm a mountain biker and need a road bike...so I guess I'll be the one with all the mis-matched items haha.  Hopefully I will really enjoy it and then decide to invest some $$ into some real equipment.  I am thinking of doing one in Carterville (between Marion and Carbondale) toward the end of May, and the one in August back in Effingham, but I'm hoping I'll be hooked and want to do more throughout the summer.

Good luck on your first tri.  I live just up a ways from you and am hoping to get their for that triathlon.  The water will be cold, so make sure you try out the wetsuit before the day of the race.  There is nothing like jumping in a 50+ degree lake with 50 of your closest friends all swimming in one direction for the first time.  If that makes you go "cool" at the end (pun intended), you are hooked.  If you see a middle aged guy with a silver bike and red trisuit come by and say hello.  Good luck.
