It can't just be me. You can't buy anything in the size you used to, unless you've grown. I used to wear an 8, now I'm a 6 and sometimes a 4. I haven't lost weight since my junior year abroad when I couldn't afford food, so I'm thinking it's some sort of conspiracy to make everyone feel like they're not quite so hefty (notthatthere'sanythingwrongwiththat). But these little 6s and 4s come with a problem: the arms and legs aren't as long as the 8s, so everything I try on makes me look like an ape with my limbs sticking too far out of my clothes. Am I weird or is anyone else finding this?

Are you trying 6P (petites) or 6R (regular)? Being the shorty - 5'2" -  I find that petites fit me better than regulars; I don't have too long sleeves, etc.

It's true, it's been true with women's clothes for a few years now. People certainly want to stay in that size 8 or whatever regardless of those additional 20lbs. I can't remember where I read it, probably The Economist...

I've worn men's jeans forever (not being a particulary femme thing and having a body shaped more for mens jeans than women's). And I'm noticing it there too, which freaks me out -- a 38 waist should be a 38 waist, with minor variations coming from cut and style. When buying a new pair of jeans now I have to go and try one brand/cut and another and another, when I used to just be able to snag one off the shelf and go.

My favourite game is comparing my old moth-eaten (but never worn, so no wash shrinkage) t-shirts to my new t-shirts. The difference between an oldschool Large and a newschool Large is just crazy.

One thing I haven't done is compared Levis 505s from the wayback machine (yeah, i have a couple pairs of vintage 70s Levis that are my gf's, and my own from when I was thin) and new Levis 505s because I'm not quite there yet with the weight loss. Will be interesting to see if even they have succumbed to American's expanse....

i tread carefully here..

In Canada I am a size 6 or 8 or even a 10

In the US I am maybe a 2 or mostly a 4..

I lived in the UK and Australia for quite a while and there seem to be some genuine sizing differences between their clothes and US clothes that have lasted at least as long as I've been traveling back and forth (15+ years). But this downsizing for US clothes seems to be a slightly more recent thing. I dunno ... maybe we're getting farther away from Canadian sizes? How tall are you? I'm 5'8", ~173 cm.

This one really gets me. I used to be a 32/30 in Levi's 501s, right on the money every time. Now I have to buy 30/32. Now I know my legs haven't grown. I wish.

I can wear petites if they're shorts or short-sleeved, anything long-sleeved or full length I'm having to look for tall sizes. 5'8" just isn't tall. It's barely above average.

Ergh, that's what I meant. 501's. I switched to 505's in college when I started getting fat.

I think Eddie Bauer clothes haven't changed much, I wear at least 1 size bigger Eddie Bauer jeans and shirts than I do any other brand.

Wierd. You'd think people would catch on.

Hmm... Eddie Bauer runs big on me.  I'm a Gap medium, but need small from Eddie Bauer.  All the time.  For pants, size 8 for both stores.  Are we talking about the same Eddie Bauer here?

I would have NO problem with being a size 4 if I could get shirts that come to my wrists and pants that go to my ankles. As it is I have to get every freakin thing tailored, which adds up. Teenage boy sizes work fairly well, but I have yet to find the store that sells skirt suits for teenage boys. Maybe Ann Taylor should look into this.

This is so true!  I usually wear a men's Large when it comes to shirts....for Christmas last year I got a Penguin shirt and a Le Tigre shirt, both XL and my chest and shoulders are like ripping through both of them.  I feel like the Hulk when I wear them.  What's up with that?

I'm 173cm too!.. my family was just talking about this the other day.. I don't know how recent it is.. But it makes sense.. Cause there are only so many X's you can put in front of a "L" before it becomes rediculous..

there are some stores even here like MEXX that I am consistently a Large in.. I don't like it so much..

Exactly. I used to be able to wear a large t-shirt and look like a normal human being. Now unless it's a small it hangs to my knees. Are we trying to get rid of some kind of cotton surplus? What is UP with the XXXL thing? My DH is 205cm but slender and he's now having to buy Large/Tall where XL used to do the trick, because everything is sized for someone who weighs 40k more than he does. What you used to get only at Bubba's Big & Tall is now standard mall fare. Next thing you know there'll be specialty Little People stores for us.

Yeah, I hear ya. I don't have the arm and leg problem, but I can't ever find a shirt that goes past my belly button. It's ridiculous. Also, wide shoulders mean that I have to buy stuff that fits my shoulders and is ridiculously baggy elsewhere or have it fit, but have the shoulder seam way up near my neck!!!! And people wonder why I'm always in a tank top.

However, my ass's pride can handle being a 10 or a 12, but not a 16 or 18!!!!!!!!

I will never buy clothes in Canada, then!

I like the european numbers (30 or 40 something?) - they have no emotional value to me.

Let me tell you something.  This IS true, and has been for some time - has something to do with the fattening of America, I'm sure.  However, give me "downsizing" anyday of the week, because you know where the one area where it's just the opposite?  What is the ONE DAY in every woman's life where she wants to feel like she's Audrey Hepburn thin?  Anyone?  That's right, it's her WEDDING DAY.  And wedding dresses run......LARGE.  The one clothing article in America where we truly need to lie to people, and some Einstein decides we need to lie in the opposite direction.  Carrie, you've seen me, I am a size 6.  My wedding dress was A SIZE 10!!!!!!!  I know it's just a number, but that REALLY REALLY hacked me off.  That is just so very wrong.

LOL. Yes, my wedding dress, yet another garment I had to have tailored to fit my unusual physique. I borrowed it from a friend who had it made for her, so I don't know what size it was supposed to be - no tag - but my grandma fitted it to me and went through fits trying to get it small enough in the chest. I don't know why all my girlfriends have to be so darn ... chesty.

Btw, love the new avatar. What the heck is that?

What are you talking about, don't you recognize me?

That is my personal favorite creature on earth (besides my dogs) - a meerkat.  They rock, big time and I had a very funny and heartwarming experience at a zoo one time with one that fell head over heels in love with me and had a crowd gathered around.
