ratherbesnowboarding - 2010-06-02 8:33 PM nevermind

I thought exactly that when you asked me to define heavier, and implied that I had meant overweight or bigger or stronger...

My nevermind wasnt to you BTW - I reread the OP and I wondered if this actually happened.  Did the 199# guy who "PROBABLY drank a few bottles of water or whatever and came back 5 minutes later and weighed 200#'s"  I mean do we really know if the 3rd guy actually got the extra #, and race in Clyde or did Panama just assume he did b/c his friends made the cut?  did the guy get a second weigh in?  I couldnt tell based on his post and his use of 'probably'.  He did imply that he didnt like the 200# guys that qualified though - which brings us back to the argument that takes up a lot of space here "Who/what body type the C/A category intended for versus the perception of what the category has become".  It's an old argument here and this wont be the last either.  It usually comes up about once a month and rehashed ad nauseum

But it did bring up a good point which we all seem to agree on - you shouldnt be adding false water weight to get into the clyde cat - you either are or you arent a clyde and you shouldnt be allowed a second weigh in to tip the scales.
Its called integrity, and that particular person should know wrong from right. Ill be doing my last clyde race this weekend. I had PF and packed on some muscle mass over the winter, my cardio is coming back and the pounds started dropping. Ill race age group if im 199 or below the day i show up for packet pick up. And i agree, 1 weigh in. If you show up to UFC too high for a championship fight the belt wont walk if weights are not met.

n.k - 2010-05-06 12:48 PM Of topic:

Does DNF = dead f**king last?

DFL is Dead F*ing Last

DNF is Did Not Finish

DNS is Did Not Start

DNS<DNF<DFL<DLA<BOP<MOP<FOP<AG TOP 3<OVERALL TOP3

I took it one step further and put what Kevin was Dead Last Age group.  So he wasn't DFL but still last in AG.  Las tri I was almost DFL by one but luck had it he was in my AG so I still was BOP as I was in every race.

Have any of you looked at power meter data from a 180 pound rider and a 210 pound rider going up hill? The amount of energy required to move more mass is greater. Hope about that same data for a 165 pound rider and a 199 pound rider going 20 mph up a 4% grade for 2 miles? That is why there is a Clyde/Athena division. It really is that simple. I was 250. Now I am 215. Soon, hopefully, I will be 190. I will be faster because of this. If you are devoted to the sport, and worried about placing, then we need to take responsibility for our weight, as much as we can, just like we do our training. I am not proud to be a clyde. But I am not ashamed of it either. It is what it is, and with enough will power and hard work, next year I will be getting my 6' 4" 190 pound butt kicked by guys who are 5'7" and 150. So be it! The clyde division right now is the likely the only way I will ever be able to place in a race. I know that when another guy, or gal for that matter, who is near the same size as me wins or betters my time, that means he/she bled more, trained more, put more in..... The only thing they will get from me is my appreciation for their efforts and begrudging respect. Sorry to vent, but this discussion makes me nuts.

How bout the fact that on Sunday at the Buffalo Springs Half, I can't even compete for a Kona slot because there are none in the Clydesdale category?

Pretty sure that Clyde cats don't get Kona slots anyway. I don't even think that WTC races have C/A cats.

Wait, just checked, there are C/A cats, but they don't ever get slots.

Okay...  I've been an AG and a Clyde division.  For me I look at this group as the "Biggest Loser" story.  Motivation to get people to strive for something.  So I do lean more to the BMI side.  If you are "in shape", regardless of Ht and Wt, (and you know who you are) then get in the age group and go for it.
After 3rd place everyone gets the same thing....  It's what you give to the event from yourself and what you take from the event for yourself that makes the difference.....

1) I've never won a race 2) I'm never going to stop trying to win a race

We're not in grade school any more, so we shouldn't just be out there "to have fun and work on sportsmanship".  I coach little league soccer and I explain to my kids, "yes, we're going to have fun, but it's alot more fun when you win".  I'm teaching them to be competive, not just in sports, but life.
Some/Most people may never win a race, but when you stop trying to , you're wasting everyone else's time.  Getting in shape is a bonus, but it's called a race, act like it.  And don't pretend for 1 second that if you busted your a** preparing for it and actually won, that you wouldn't be proud.
