Event warmup:

Ran about a mile to warm up. Set up and then waited in swimming pool area where it was warm.
Swim
  • 06m 36s
  • 300 yards
  • 02m 12s / 100 yards
Comments:

Started way too fast and couldn't relax. Got really irritated with myself for this so stopped briefly tried to compose myself and continued. Did better but never really got into a rythym. One person passed me but other than this I had plenty of space to swim.
What would you do differently?:

Relax and find my rythym better.
Transition 1
  • 01m 51s
Comments:

Transition was fine. As the temperature was cool I put on two shirts. The long sleeved shirt took some time to get on as I was wet. Got the clothing right though as my temperature was fine for the rest of the race.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing
Bike
  • 51m 36s
  • 11 miles
  • 12.79 mile/hr
Comments:

Used a mountain bike. Did worse than expected on the fairly minor hills on the course for some reason. Maybe it was the combination of the wind and hills.
I trained the least on the bike with probably no more than 5-6 training sessions in total since starting training.
What would you do differently?:

Train much more on the bike.
Transition 2
  • 00m 36s
Comments:

Transition was fine. I used running shoes on the bike so didn't need to change. Took helmet off, took a drink of water and checked on the guy who fell off the bike in front of me coming into the transition.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing.
Run
  • 26m 22s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 08m 29s  min/mile
Comments:

I was pleased with the run. I started out from the bike transition walking for about 10-15 seconds and then picked up the pace to normal speed relatively quickly. Felt good after the bike with only a little discomfort transitioning to running.
I kept the pace steady throughout the run but couldn't catch the few people in front of me. I had little spare at the end and couldn't pick up the pace.
What would you do differently?:

Most of my training for this was regular 3-5 mile runs. Will include some interval training to improve strength and speed.
Post race
Warm down:

Jogged about half a mile back down course and walked around a little. No stiffness the following day and generally felt fine.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

The bike section was definitely the weakest. Obviously using a $100 mountain bike with regular running shoes didn't help but I did very little bike training from starting training for this four months ago. Need to train more and consider getting a more suitable bike.

Event comments:

I really enjoyed this race despite being annoyed with my swim.
