Overall Rank = /
Age Group = 45-49
Age Group Rank = 9/22
Event warmup:

light jog for 10 min., stretched, light jog for 10 more min.
Run
  • 23m 22s
  • 3 miles
  • 07m 47s  min/mile
Comments:

I felt strong and could have gone quite a bit faster, but I was afraid of blowing up early.
What would you do differently?:

Could had used a bit less caution and gone a bit faster (7:30 pace would have been reasonable), but otherwise wouldn't do anything different.
Transition 1
  • 01m 39s
Comments:

No problems here.
What would you do differently?:

Wouldn't do anything differently.
Bike
  • 1h 03m 49s
  • 34 kms
  • 31.97 km/hr
Comments:

This too went fine, and though I had hoped to exceed 20mph (they listed my pace as 19.4mph, but when I convert km to miles I get 19.86mph), I was satisfied with the result. I liked my bike set up with fast-forward seatpost and clip-on aerobars, but it's kind of a pain to have to reach back to the brakes to shift. Definitely motivated toward finding a TT bike before September.
My calves cramped a little toward the end of the ride, but I was able to ride through it and it went away.
What would you do differently?:

More bodyglide on the crotch area, and I should probably look into a tri saddle before my 70.3 next month. Got a bit sore, uh, "down there."
Transition 2
  • 01m 56s
Comments:

Not my fastest transition, but at least I remembered to take off my helmet! I opted to wear my more comfortable running shoes that I have to tie, so that took a few seconds.
What would you do differently?:

Not sure. I might have worn my racing shoes with elastic laces but I hadn't run in them in a while so I decided not to.
Run
  • 25m 30s
  • 3 miles
  • 08m 30s  min/mile
Comments:

This could have gone MUCH better. Calves started cramping a bit right at the beginning, but I was plowing through it. Then my left hamstring started cramping and I HAD to stop and stretch it for a bit. That worked, and I finished strong (kept my gps pegged at around 7:15 for the last 1.5 miles), but the damage to my time was done.
What would you do differently?:

Not much I could have done differently for the run itself. I ran hard until the end and did the best I could under the circumstances.
Post race
Warm down:

Stretching, walking.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

I don't think I was sufficiently hydrated at the start of the race (I have a tendency to be bad about this). I really should have started with more water the day before, and kept with it.

Event comments:

Had a great time overall, and didn't have to get wet! It was a COLD start though.

Sounds like a nice race minus the cramping.  Cold races are not my thing.  Good job.

Nice race.  Calf cramps / stomach cramps took me out of my expected time on my last DU.  Let me know if you figure out how to make sure it doesn't happen again and I will do the same.  I think my fit played into it.  When I removed my seat post to pull the rear hydration off for the race I didn't put it back in the same place (on accident).  The pull on my legs was different.  Hydration and electrolytes can come into play also but I think my problem was mostly due to the fit.

You had great paces when you take away those cramps (normally due to hydration or inadequate warmup).   Congrats!

Great race...... sorry to hear about the cramping. Do you think it was caused by lack of hydration?

Nice effort...sorry about the cramping, though. Good lessons learned all around prior to the 70.3.
