Subject: Plus Size Women's Swimsuit
Hi everyone!

I signed up for my very first triathlon this September.  I've already started training in the running and biking, but I need to buy a new swimsuit before starting swimming.  For the race I will probably be wearing a trisuit or a wetsuit since its an ocean swim, but I wanted to look for a regualr suit for lap swimming in the pool.   I have a larger bust, so I need to make sure there is some support up there.  Any recomendations?

Has anyone tried the Speedo Aquatic Xtr Life Lycra Plus size Ultraback swimsuit? I'm curious because of the sizing.  I'm normally wear a 16W/18W in clothes, but according to the chart I would have to order a size 24.  Does that seem right?

Thanks in advance!

That seems big however I've learned that my clothing size does not translate to swim and tri gear. I'm an 8 but have to buy 34/36, 10/12, or Large/XL to fit my bust in a swim suit.

The Speedo suits provide more compression support than anything (even with the shelf bra build in). Plan to have the girls squished. When it comes to lap swimming compression support tends to work better for me than underwire. TYR offers a line of suits up to size 22, I've been pretty happy with my TYR suits (again, support from compression).

Good luck in the search!

You might try looking at www.swimoutlet.com.  They have some plus size fitness swimwear.  The compression suits don't work well for me, but I can get by with a suit with soft cups.  I bought this suit this winter and it has held up well.  http://www.swimoutlet.com/product_p/18179.htm. (I'm 5'9", 167 lbs, and a size 38-40 C/D; bought a size 16 for the added length ... just wish it was a little longer in the length for my height.)  Good luck!

I am also larger in the bust area and I find that buying a size smaller in competition suits provides the best support for me. 5'7" 172 36d. sizing charts puts me in a 38 but I like the 36 support better. I have to get over being self consious about the suit being tighter everywhere else also though .

I have the Speedo you are talking about and am large-busted.

The Speedo has virtually no support, but there aren't many options out there.  I've heard some good things about Junonia's Auquasport Crossback tank.  I'm about ready to try it.  I wear a 16 too and the competition swimsuits that do come plus, are awfully low in the front -- All I do is catch water!  LOL

I find Land's End to be the best for plus sized suits.  They even have suits with built in DDD bra's.  They are a little pricey but they hold up well and come in separates if you need to buy a different sized top than bottom.  They even have swimming shorts which I love.  You can return things to Sears for free if they don't fit.  FYI, they tend to run big.

please please please belive me on this - I am almost the same size as you and the Speedo Aquatic suits are not great for training (I started training last year in that suit you mentioned).  I am also large on top and found that the Speedo suit was too low cut and I got a lot of drag.

this year I am training in the Speedo water polo suit and LOVE it. I can't say enough about how fantastic it is. It's cut higher in front and also covers your back so you don't get back bulges   I got mine on sale from swimoutlet. The size 40 is perfect. Its the Speedo Avenger, on for $51.00 rightnbow. Also, the fabric lasts forever.  The only thing is zipping it up (if you aren't really flexible you may need someone to help you zip it; or just tie a string to the zipper)

x2 on everything here. I bought the Speedo suit and there is zero support. I kept it to wear kayaking, but could never swim laps in it for fear of the girls popping out!

I have been wearing the Junonia Crossback suit for about 4 years now and love it. I am a 44DDD and it is great! I swim twice a week in a VERY chlorinated pool, and I can get about two years out of one. They are expensive, but high quality and work great.

Thanks everyone for your comments and suggestions.  I think I'm going to look into Junonia's Auquasport Crossback.  I figured that a good quality suit with the support I need would cost a little more, so the price doesn't bother me that much.

One quick questions... is that suit true to the size chart?  I'm wondering were I would fall since they have the XL size being 14/16W and 1XL being 18/20W.  I wear between 16/18W.  With me beginning my training, I'm assuming that I will lose some weight and inches, so maybe the regular XL would work, right?

Thanks again!

I agree with everyone about Speedo not having bust support --terrible!  I didn't like the Land's End either for bust support.  I'm still trying to find a suit I like after 5 years of 2x weekly swimming.  Keep us posted.

check out H2O swimwear before you order anything.  I found them while working at the Y a few years ago and I swear you cannot kill these suits.  They fit great and last forever.  I just go with the regular tank but the side accent support tank is a big hit with others.

I haven't had luck with Speedo's suits...my breasts try to escape either over the front or out the sides. I end up wearing a tri bra under it (I got the suit on Ebay for dirt cheap, and I'm too cheap to get rid of it when I have a working solution).

There is yet to be a swimsuit I've found with great bust support. I think its because the fabrics are incompatible (ie stretch fabric for suit is not very supportive, and great bras don't have stretchy material) So, I wear a Speedo water polo suit, with an inexpensive, decently supportive, X or T back training bra underneath. Works like a charm :-)

I like this speedo http://www.swimoutlet.com/product_p/1109.htm It's very comfortable for practice and higher cut on the chest; however, for a race I always wear a Moving Comfort sports bra underneath for added support.  They are made of polyester so they dry some during the bike and don't stretch out like cotton.

I have an Ocean swimsuit. I love it, it has full coverage, it's chlorine resistant, has built in chest support, and comes in bigger sizes.

If I am going for speed and don't want drag, I wear a running bra under my suit.  It ain't sexy but it holds things in and I am markedly faster that way.  Plus in races I have on the bra, so it's more like training for that, right?  There are no suits that I own that have enough support -- but the tighter ones are better-- I have speedo and nike and others--and while they are OK, I would not say they provide what us busty gals need once they meet the water!  I know the reason my race times are always faster than my pool times--the wetsuit holds everything in place!  I have a couple of suits from http://www.splish.com/ and while they are super cute (one looks like it was knit, the other is LUNA) I have some issues with how they fit.   They run super small.  But the one with the thinner straps does provide a lot of support for a swimsuit.  You'd think the thicker straps would be more supportive but they aren't.    Be sure to check your hip size if ordering one of them, as that is where they are tight.  Two pieces work, too--I have this one, and it has ok support:  http://www.rei.com/product/750592 although it says it isn't available any more--there  might be similar ones out there.  I am wondering if Nike or Speedo knows the market they are missing by not having supportive swimwear???  I'd buy 10 suits if I found one that I liked that was functional, cute and supportive!

I'm with ya on that one!  I do like how long the Speedo Endurance suits last now I just need some support from them.

I was in your same situation 2 weeks ago.  I finally took myself to a swim store and tried on suits until my hearts content.  I had to do it.  Yes, they make lap suits with 'girls' support.  (I am 38D)

I narrowed it down to two, more by comfort and support and ended up picking the 'uglier' print one because the back supports were much better and it did not cut underneath my arm.  Suit ran pretty much what I wear in a dress size.  I wear 8/10 jeans, but size 12 dress becuase I am a little more top heavy.  The brand was Ocean/Aqua Shape line.

I tried on a few competition suits at the big box stores, and everything smashed the girls and made me cringe.

Hope this helps - if you order online I would defintely order from somewhere with top rate customer service and low return shipping costs.    If you can't find a swim store in your area.

Good luck!

Look for a FITNESS suit, versus a swim suit.  Most of them have bust support, and even some have underwires.   I also have an Ocean fitness suit and several Nike suits.

The Ocean fits better, I found in a swim store locally.  I paid $65 for it, but was worth every penny.  It's not the most gorgeous thing in the world, but I was getting it to swim laps in, not go to the beach and model.
