keyone - 2010-06-15 7:53 AM I like Xterra wetsuits, and they have a fit guarantee so that if you buy it online and it doesn't fit, you can trade for another size. If you are borderline between two sizes, go with the larger one. I have a Vortex full and love it! PS: they are always having 50% off sales, so wait until you see one of those before you buy! Looks like the Vector is already 50% off now.

Like the sale they have going right now---50% off---use code:  summer50

full is $199, sleeveless is $149.....

Has anyone made their hotel reservations? I was hoping to make this a mini vacation for my family.

I haven't yet but we have been going to Myrtle for the last couple summers as vacation so we'll just stay at the same place we've been staying----definitely making it a mini-vacation for the family!!  Tons of places to stay and prices should be very reasonable given the time of year...

Is there anyone out there that has done this race before?

Or are there any race reports?? Searching forums on phone is hard to do.

Myrtle Beach Marriott Resort & Spa at Grande Dunes is a good place to stay. It is about 1 mile from the start or you could try the Sand dunes/Ocean Dunes hotel http://www.sandsresorts.com/resorts/sanddunes/  that is also very close.

The Halfmax series changes venue every year. I think it was in Nevada last year, and Missouri the year before that. So, you can't go back and look at old race reports to learn about the course. We'll be charting unknown territory!

last year the Half max was at Redman in OK city.. that race is held every year, so i am assuming that the Myrtle Beach race has happened before.

Hello

The big guy is in for the 1/2 IM AquaBike.

After all the leg & foot problems this year I figured the swim & ride were parts of the race that I could do so I want to stretch myself to close out the season.

I am looking forward race day at national event like this.

Kevin

halman - 2010-06-10 12:47 PM going to sign up for the olympic distance. the swim in the waterway should be fast if it is timed to go with the current; no waves and smooth fresh water.

And alligators...watch out for them

Hey all, I'm new here, and I live in Myrtle Beach. I'm signing up for the "quartermax" ...my first oly. I'm excited!

New to BT and tri in general, however 6 months deployed to Iraq and nothing to do got me feeling ambitious. I'm planning on giving the olympic distance a go. I feel confident with the run, though the bike and swim is a bit intimidating. Any words for this newbie?

Welcome!

Swim.  A lot.  Make sure you are VERY comfortable swimming the distance.  Spend some time swimming in open water if at all possible.

Use the logs on BT, and you can get some good advice from folks here.  Meanwhile, what is your current S/B/R weekly volume?

Hello

I was reading the race website and noticed that we have to check our bikes in on Friday.

I figured I would just have it cleaned and lubed up and not worry about it.  Will they have tire pumps inside transition or should we all bring our own?

I was just looking over the course maps and noticed that there is also a quartermax and sprint race going on too. It looks like they are timed so all races finish at about the same time. Isn't that going to make the bike and run course crowded? And how will I know if some chick with a 49 on her leg passed me on the run, which race is she doing? Me no likie!

Weird.  I knew they had the other races going on, but assumed that the Oly and sprint would start soon after the HIM, and so finish much earlier.

I have done a few races where the distances were 'mixed' like that, and in those cases, the different distances had different colored race numbers, so it was fairly easy to tell who is who.  Hopefully they'll have something in place like that.

They usually have some pumps in transition area for race morning inflation---BUT if you have someone there for you just bring your own so that you are sure to have one!!

Yeah the mixed race thing could be interesting---I wonder with the closing of the road for the bike course if they didn't have to make the races at the same time in order to get the go-ahead on road permits/closing...  It's always nice to have company on the run but could sure make it tough to figure out who you are competing against....

I emailed the Ultramax folks, and here is their reply...this is going to be a BIG race. I think the biggest race I ever did was maybe 1200 athletes.

The races are all on the same day....however, we have assigned the start times so we avoid such problems as you have described.

Halfmax begins at 7:30 am, the quartermax distance begins at 9:00 am and the sprint distance doesn't start until 11:00 am. There will still be some overlapping, but by the time the quartermax athletes begin their bike, the halfmax group should be well into the bike portion of their race. The entire bike course is mostly on highway and will be shut down from traffic, so there will be lots of room for bikers.

As far as how many athletes will be competing, we have a cap for the halfmax entries at 1500 and then 1000 for the sprint and quartermax combined. We may or may not reach those caps. Typically the way we number our bibs help let people know which race they are in. For example, the halfmax athletes may be numbered 1 - 1500, quartermax athletes 2001 - 3000 and the sprint athletes 3001 - 4000. There will be some way to know.

I hope this helps and eases your mind a bit. Let me know if you have any other questions!

By the time the run comes around, I will be in my own little pain cave, so I don't think I will even notice other peoples numbers.
