I want to do this!!!  However, I'm not sure if it's realistic.  Currently I'm at the point where I can comfortably swim 1750m continuously a few times a week.  Do you think I would be able to safely build up to 5K by the end of August?  How are you training for this?  Anything special, or are you just doing your normal tri training?

I was seriously looking at doing this one, but I'm not sure it's going to work into my schedule.  Kid stuff is seriously limiting the races this year.  If I don't make it out there I am very interested to hear from those that do; so I can put it on my schedule for next year  (or not).

I'd LOVE to do this race!  But, we're going to be in Vegas for my fathers 60th birthday.

If you're interested in OWS races, check out the Harbor Springs Coastal Crawl on Sunday, August 1st.  You can do 1, 2 or 3 miles.  I did the 2 mile race last year and loved it.  I'm shooting for the 3 mile race this year.

you know....drink the koolaid, follow the crowd.  It's how approximately 15-20 MI BTers ended up signed up for the Cedar Point Half Iron.

I won't tell you who the dealer is.  Just drink anything a BTer hands you.

I still wish they would open up the Straits fo Mackinaw swim each year.  I'd love to do that.

5K...what's that in laps of the pool....I know it's many, many, many...gulp.

5k=5000m
Standard lap pool: 25m in length
laps(lengths)=5000m/25m=200

If it is a 25yd pool (typical for indoor):
laps(lengths)=5000m*(1.09361yd/1m)/25yd=218.722=219

Average time to swim a length: lets just say :30sec

Total time swim time without stopping: 1hour 40min

Aint so bad...

I'm intrigued to the point of nerding it up a little bit, concerning cutoff times and whatnot for the 5k swim.

The cutoff times listed are as follows:

  • Tube to Round Lake. 0.75 mile. 37:30
  • Poto Bridge. 1.60 mile. 1:20:00
  • Blind Lake Point. 2.00 mile. 1:40:00
  • IM distance. 2.40 mile. 2:00:00 (we'll put a festooned pontoon boat at this point

For now, I'll just convert the miles to hundreds of yards, and I'll assume 1 mile = 1760 yards
.75 miles = 1320 yds or 13.2 100's
1.6 miles = 2816 yds or 28.16 100's
2.0 miles = 3520 yds or 35.20 100's
2.4 miles = 4224 yds or 42.24 100's
3.1 miles = 5456 yds or 54.56 100's

So... you can beat the cutoff times (at least) if you can manage faster than 2:50 /100yds

and swimming at cutoff pace will put you at the finish line in 02:35:00 (155 minutes)

DANGIT!!  Now you have me thinking about it, really considering this race and wishing my toes were webbed!

I believe it's the first year for this event.

I think I'll be doing the 5k as  I don't have any races that weekend and don't have to work that weekend.

It is the first year for the event... I gave it some thought, but I'm leary - logistics must be a nightmare to begin with, add in that it's the first year for the event.  I will say the Epic folks do a good job (they use to be involved with EE).

I am thinking about it, but probably won't commit until after my half.  If I do it, it will definitely be the 5K.

I'd be VERY surprised if this sells out.

Straits of Mackinac, that would be something! Sounds like they have done this in the past??
