Has anyone ever frozen their aero water bottle with their drink of choice before a race?

The event I have this requires me to have my bike in transition at 7am and because it’s a pool swim my wave does not start until 10 ish. So if I leave cold drinks in it a 7am by 10 it will be warm.

The thing that worries me about freezing the aero bottle is that straw is in the middle and if it does not thaw enough I will not be able to drink.

Anyone have any experience with this?

Why do you want it cold?

And how long is the race?

I have the Bontrager aerobottle, the one with the insulated cover. I fill mine with ice cubes, a little water and a couple Nunn tablets, and I have cold liquid throughout the bike. Don't think it would keep it cold for over three hours, though.

Can you freeze it at an angle, maybe half full, so you don't freeze the straw?

My wife just completely fills the bottle with ice and flavoring. "Zimms" I prefer my fluids warm. If it's a sprint I skip the fluids on the bike. There is plenty of time to drink after the race.

Road, its a sprint, but I like my drinks cold, and want to see if it helps keep my  core temperature down. I have a tendency to over heat easily

Fill it half full without the straw then fill it with ice cubes before the race. Should be able to at least stay a little cold untill race time.

I usually drink a 50/50 mixture of Gatorade and H20.  In the past, I've filled bottles with Gatorade and ice cubes and then kept them in an ice chest in my car on the way to the race site.  It actually worked too well one time - the ice hadn't melted and I was still thirsty after sucking out all of the Gatorade.

I never have needed more than one water bottle for a sprint race.

Tried it once... Problem is that if it is that the straw sits higher than normal because of the frozen part on the bottom.  Didn't work so well.

You should do a dry run.  Before the race, freeze a bottle and then put it on the bike outside for however many hours you think it'll be out there.

I do it all the time. The trick is, fill it about 3/4 because it expands. I freeze the straw inside the fluid. It always thaws out by the time I am ready to drink. I just bought the insulated version, it doesn't hold as much. I haven't been able to test it yet.

x2.  No need to completely fill it, just enough to keep everything cold.

While these solutions are great ^^^^^ the bottom line is for a sprint you do not need to even drink at all.  Or if you do, it is a minimum of one small bottle.

For longer rides and races it may be needed.  But again, why do you want it that cold?

I suppose it depends on the temperature of where you live.

If I froze a bottle and left it out at 7am, it would be melted and warm by 8:30.

I just prefer my drinks room temperature.  My guess is that a few ounces of cold drink every once in a while does nothing for your core temperature.

Profile Design makes a new Insulated Aero Drink.  I just started using it last week and fill the dam thing with ice.  I ran out of liquid and the ice never melted.  Needless to say the Insulation works great.

Lots of great ideas to keep your drink cold. Just wanted to say that  I am impressed that you are willing to rack your bike then wait 3 hrs for your swim wave.  Dang that is a long time to be standing around waiting to swim!  At my HIM I think the longest anyone had to wait was ~1.5 hrs.  Not sure I would have the will to wait three hours for a pool swim.  Good luck!

Dont think anyone mentioned it above but the bottle will sweat a bit if you freeze it or put ice cubes in it. I did this once and had a puddle by my bike. Front wheel wet, brakes wet, anything under the bottle wet. Not really a huge deal, just a heads up.

I know it's been a year since this post but I was wondering if you tried freezing your aero bottle.  I want to do it but don't want it to crack or break since it is hard plastic.  Thanks!

Wrapping the bottle in aluminum foil will also retain the cold / coolness, is the bike racked in a shaded area ?
